COMMENT

オフホワイトのダイヤルにブラックプリントのローマンインデックスを配し、内側にミニッツトラックを備えた端正な構成です。ブルースチール製のバトンハンドと、円錐形状のスピネルカボションを配したリューズが、クラシックでありながらも特徴的な個性を与えています。ゴールドケースに対してブラック・ホワイト・ブルーが調和しつつ対比を生み、洗練された表情を見せる一本です。当時のオリジナルボックスが付属します。

使用されていない純正革ベルトが目を引きます。ダイヤルはクラックがなく、インデックスの剥がれや欠けは見られません。表面はしっとりとした質感が残り、ブルースチール針は鮮やかな色合いを維持しています。ケース全体は保存状態に優れ、未使用に近い希少なコンディションを誇ります。分解掃除を行っておらず、現状での販売です。

「must」表記が加わる直前に製造された、いわゆる“プレマスト”と呼ばれるタンクモデルです。初代タンクのデザインを忠実に受け継ぎつつ、ヨーロピアンスタイルと称されるスピネルリューズを採用した点に当時の特徴が表れています。タンクコレクションの長い歴史の中でも過渡期を象徴する存在であり、カルティエのデザイン変遷を体現するモデルとして高いコレクション価値を備えています。

現在では、ジュエラーとして名高いカルティエですが、まだ懐中時計が主流だった1904年に本格的な腕時計を製作したのはカルティエが最初でした。「タンク」という名前は、“戦車”を意味し、第一次世界大戦中の終結に貢献したといわれる、ルノー製の戦車がデザインの基となっています。

COMMENT

The off-white dial is laid out with crisp black-printed Roman numerals and an inner minute track, presenting a balanced and refined composition. Blued-steel baton hands and a crown set with a conical spinel cabochon lend a distinctive character, marrying classical elegance with Cartier’s unmistakable identity. Against the gold case, the interplay of black, white, and blue creates both harmony and contrast, giving the watch a sophisticated presence. Notably, the piece comes with its original period box.

The case is free from scratches, and the original leather strap remains unused. The dial shows no cracks, with all indices intact and unblemished. Its surface retains a supple texture, while the blued-steel hands preserve their vivid hue. The case overall has been superbly preserved, representing a near-unused state of remarkable rarity. Please note that this watch has not undergone disassembly or cleaning, and is offered in its current condition.

Produced just before the introduction of the “must” signature, this is a so-called “Pre-Must” Tank. While faithfully continuing the design language of the original Tank, it incorporates the so-called “European style” spinel crown, a hallmark of its era. Within the long lineage of the Tank, it stands as a transitional piece, symbolizing Cartier’s design evolution and carrying significant value as a collectible.

Today Cartier is celebrated worldwide as a jeweler, yet it was among the first to pioneer the modern wristwatch as early as 1904, when pocket watches were still the norm. The name “Tank” derives from its inspiration: the Renault tanks that played a decisive role in World War I. This military reference translated into one of the most iconic and enduring watch designs in history.
