COMMENT

スピードマスター Ref.2998は、プロフェッショナル表記以前に製造された第二世代のモデルであり、ヴィンテージ・ムーンウォッチの中でも特に人気の高いリファレンスです。本個体は1962年製で、Cal.321を搭載。アルファ針と外周タキメーターDO90ベゼルを備え、39mm径のステンレススチールケースは後年のプロフェッショナルケースに比べ、軽快でシャープな印象を与えます。2998-62はこのリファレンスの最終期にあたり、次世代のRef.105.002へと繋がる枝番です。ブレスレットは日本で“キャタピラー”と呼ばれるRef.7912、エンドリンク6、クラスプデイト62/4が装着されています。

ケースは適度な経年を残しつつもエッジが明瞭に保たれた良好なコンディションです。ダイヤルはミントコンディションで、夜光塗料は濃いベージュに変化し、ヴィンテージならではの美しい表情を見せています。ベゼルはわずかなフェードや剥離が見られるものの、現存する2998としては優れた状態を誇ります。弊社にて分解清掃済みです。

今でこそ「Speedmasterイコール宇宙」という図式がすぐに浮かび上がりますが、当時は宇宙とは全く関係のない、純粋なモータースポーツ用の時計として誕生。また、スピードマスターは、ダイヤルではなく外周ベゼルにタキメーターを表示した世界で初めての時計と言われています。1959年、スピードマスターはマイナーチェンジをします。ベゼルがアルミニウムの黒色ベースとなり、針の形状がアロー針からアルファ針に変更されたことで、より視認性が高まっています。NASAは宇宙での過酷な環境にも耐えうる丈夫なクロノグラフを探しており、名だたる強豪に勝ったスピードマスターを公式時計として採用。その後1969年人類初の月面着陸の際、スピードマスターを着用していたことは有名な話。

The Speedmaster Ref.2998 represents the second generation of the model, produced prior to the introduction of the “Professional” designation, and remains one of the most sought-after references among vintage Moonwatches. This particular example, dating to 1962, houses the famed Cal.321 movement. It features Alpha hands and a DO90 tachymeter bezel, while its 39mm stainless steel case presents a lighter, sharper profile compared to the later Professional cases. The 2998-62 marks the final iteration of this reference, leading into the subsequent Ref.105.002. Completing the watch is the Ref.7912 bracelet—colloquially known in Japan as the “caterpillar”—with end links 6 and a clasp dated 62/4.

The case retains crisp edges with light but attractive aging, presenting an overall excellent condition. The dial remains in mint state, with luminous material aged to a deep beige tone, imparting a refined vintage character. While today the Speedmaster is synonymous with space exploration, it was originally conceived purely as a motorsport chronograph. It was also the first wristwatch to feature a tachymeter scale on its external bezel rather than on the dial. In 1959, the Speedmaster underwent a notable update: the bezel became black anodized aluminum, and the hand design shifted from broad arrow to alpha hands, enhancing legibility. When NASA sought a chronograph capable of withstanding the extreme conditions of space, the Speedmaster prevailed against formidable rivals and was officially adopted. Its role in the 1969 Apollo 11 mission—when it was worn on the first lunar landing—remains one of the most iconic moments in horological history.
