スピードマスター・マークIIは、人類が初めて月面に降り立った1969年に発表されたモデルで、それまでのクラシカルなスピードマスターの意匠を刷新し、これから訪れる宇宙開拓時代を象徴するモダンなスタイルで開発されました。本個体はブラックマットのダイヤルにオレンジが映えるレーシングダイヤルを備え、オレンジ、ホワイト、マゼンタ、グレーの独特な色彩の調和が1970年代らしい雰囲気を際立たせています。ムーブメントにはムーンウォッチと同じCal.861を搭載し、サブダイヤルの配置はスピードマスターの系譜を忠実に受け継いでいます。装備されているブレスレットはRef.1186/215、エンドリンクは154が組み合わされています。

ケースはわずかな使用傷があるものの、全体として良好な状態を保っています。傷のつきやすいラグ周りに目立つ損傷が見られない点は特筆すべきで、清潔感を損なわない外観です。ダイヤルはマットな質感を維持し、針とインデックスは経年によりベージュへと変化し、落ち着いたトーンで統一されています。夜光は自然なエイジングを見せ、ヴィンテージらしい風格を漂わせています。弊社にて分解清掃済みです。

1970年代クロノグラフの象徴ともいえるCライン、いわゆるトノー型やクッション型のケースデザインは、このマークIIが普及を先導した存在といわれています。近年ではエキゾチックなダイヤルデザインが注目を集めており、とりわけスピーディ・マークIIのレーシングダイヤルは人気が高く、入手困難な仕様となっています。時代を映し出す個性と、実用的な性能を兼ね備えた一本として、今なおコレクターズピースとしての魅力を放ち続けています。

今でこそ「Speedmasterイコール宇宙」という図式がすぐに浮かび上がりますが、初期の世代は宇宙とは全く関係のない、純粋なモータースポーツ用の時計として誕生。また、スピードマスターは、ダイヤルではなく外周ベゼルにタキメーターを表示した世界で初めての時計と言われています。1959年、スピードマスターはマイナーチェンジをします。ベゼルがアルミニウムの黒色ベースとなり、針の形状がアロー針からアルファ針に変更されたことで、より視認性が高まっています。NASAは宇宙での過酷な環境にも耐えうる丈夫なクロノグラフを探しており、名だたる強豪に勝ったスピードマスターを公式時計として採用。その後1969年人類初の月面着陸の際、スピードマスターを着用していたことは有名なお話。

The Speedmaster Mark II was introduced in 1969, the same year mankind first set foot on the moon. It represented a bold departure from the classical aesthetics of the earlier Speedmasters, reimagined in a modern style that symbolized the new era of space exploration. This example features a racing dial, where vivid orange contrasts strikingly against a matte black background. The interplay of orange, white, magenta, and grey creates a unique chromatic balance, heightening the distinctly 1970s character. Powering the watch is the same Cal.861 movement found in the Moonwatch, with sub-dial placement faithfully continuing the Speedmaster lineage. It is fitted with a Ref.1186/215 bracelet paired with 154 end links.

The case retains its original edge in splendid condition, showcasing a beautiful combination of hairline and mirror finishes. The dial is in mint condition, with prints retaining their original color without fading. The hands' luminous coating has taken on a rich beige hue. It has been disassembled and cleaned by our company, confirming a power reserve of over 48 hours.

The 1970s recognized the cushion-shaped case, also known as the C-line or tonneau case, as a symbol of chronographs. The Speedmaster Mark II played a pivotal role in pioneering and popularizing this trend. Exotic dials are now highly appreciated in contemporary times, with the Racing Dial being the most sought-after in the Speedmaster Mark II, making it challenging to acquire.

While today the equation "Speedmaster equals space" quickly comes to mind, the initial generations were born not as space-related but as pure motorsports watches. Moreover, the Speedmaster is hailed as the world's first watch to display a tachymeter on the outer bezel instead of the dial. In 1959, the Speedmaster underwent a minor change, featuring a black aluminum base for the bezel and a transition from arrow hands to alpha hands, enhancing visibility. NASA sought a robust chronograph capable of withstanding the harsh space environment, and the Speedmaster, victorious against formidable competitors, was officially adopted as the space agency's timepiece. The iconic story of the Speedmaster being worn during the first human moon landing in 1969 is well-known.
