現在では、ジュエラーとして名高いカルティエですが、まだ懐中時計が主流だった1904年に本格的な腕時計を製作したのはカルティエが最初でした。「タンク」という名前は、“戦車”を意味し、第一次世界大戦中の終結に貢献したといわれる、ルノー製の戦車がデザインの基となっています。その中でもマストシリーズは文字盤のバリエーションが豊富にあります。

COMMENT

Since its creation in 1919, Cartier’s iconic Tank has been produced across generations, embodying timeless elegance. This example is a so-called “Pre-Must Tank,” made before the launch of the Must line in the 1970s. It features a gold-filled case and a white Roman dial without the “must de” signature, displaying a refined design language later echoed in the Louis Cartier Collection.

The case remains in very good condition, with sharp lug edges well preserved and minimal signs of wear. The dial shows fine surface relief from age, lending it a vintage character, while the hands remain free from damage and retain their brilliance. The black-printed indexes are fully intact and clearly legible. Serviced and disassembled by our watchmaker.

Watches produced before the introduction of the Must Tank in 1977 are often referred to by collectors as “Pre-Must.” Emerging during Cartier’s early efforts to expand wristwatch production in the early 1970s, these pieces are now regarded as mysterious and fascinating creations from the brand’s formative years.
