COMMENT

1世代前のRef.2998との違いは、時分針がアルファ型からバー型に変更されている点にあります。次世代のRef.145.012と異なり、本機Ref.105.003にはリューズガードがなく、ラグはストレート形状。全体として無骨で、スピードマスター本来のツールウォッチらしい風格が際立ちます。ムーブメントには伝説的なCal.321を搭載。ピラーホイール式クロノグラフにチラネジ付きテンプ、巻き上げヒゲを備えた高級機構で、現代でも多くの愛好家に評価され続けています。ブレスレットには、日本で“キャタピラー”の愛称で親しまれるフラットリンクのRef.7912を装備し、エンドリンク6、クラスプデイト65/1が組み合わされています。

ケースは使用感の少ない良好なコンディションです。ベゼルは全体に退色が見られますが、元のブラックトーンをしっかりと保っています。ダイヤルはエイジングの影響がほとんど見られず、落ち着いた質感を維持。針は細かく見ますとわずかなプリント欠けが見られるものの、ホワイトの色味が残っており、視認性に影響はありません。針とインデックスに塗布された夜光塗料はブラウンへと変化し、ヴィンテージらしい深みのある表情を添えています。弊社にて分解清掃済みです。

NASAの公式採用により一躍その名を世界に知られることとなったスピードマスター。その原点のひとつとされるプレ・ムーン期のRef.105.003は、ツールとしての機能性に加え、洗練されたデザイン性を兼ね備えた歴史的モデルです。特に本個体は、オリジナル性が高く、保存状態にも優れた貴重な一本。単なるヴィンテージではなく、現代の審美眼にも応える完成度を持ち合わせた、コレクターズピースとしてふさわしい存在です。

今でこそ「Speedmasterイコール宇宙」という図式がすぐに浮かび上がりますが、当時は宇宙とは全く関係のない、純粋なモータースポーツ用の時計として誕生。また、スピードマスターは、ダイヤルではなく外周ベゼルにタキメーターを表示した世界で初めての時計と言われています。1959年、スピードマスターはマイナーチェンジをします。ベゼルがアルミニウムの黒色ベースとなり、針の形状がアロー針からアルファ針に変更されたことで、より視認性が高まっています。NASAは宇宙での過酷な環境にも耐えうる丈夫なクロノグラフを探しており、名だたる強豪に勝ったスピードマスターを公式時計として採用。その後1969年人類初の月面着陸の際、スピードマスターを着用していたことは有名な話。

COMMENT

The key distinction between this reference and its predecessor, Ref. 2998, lies in the transition from alpha-shaped to baton hands for the hour and minute indicators. Unlike its successor, Ref. 145.012, the present Ref. 105.003 features no crown guards and is fitted with straight lugs—an austere, utilitarian design that highlights the Speedmaster’s original identity as a professional tool watch. At its heart is the legendary Caliber 321, a column-wheel chronograph movement featuring a screwed balance and a Breguet overcoil—hallmarks of a high-grade construction still revered by collectors today. This example is paired with the flat-link Ref. 7912 bracelet, affectionately known in Japan as the "caterpillar," and is accompanied by end links 6 and a clasp dated 65/1.

The case remains in excellent condition with only minimal signs of wear. The bezel shows even fading throughout, yet retains a strong trace of its original black tone. The dial displays minimal aging and maintains a calm, consistent texture. While there are minor losses in the white printing on the hands upon close inspection, legibility remains unaffected. The lume on both the hands and indexes has aged to a warm brown, adding depth and vintage character. Fully disassembled and cleaned by our workshop.

Ref. 105.003 is widely regarded as one of the foundational “pre-Moon” Speedmasters—renowned not only for its robust functionality but also for its design elegance. Famously adopted by NASA, the Speedmaster became an icon through its spacefaring legacy, and this reference stands as a direct link to that history. This particular example is notable for its high degree of originality and excellent preservation, making it far more than a vintage timepiece—it is a collector-grade watch that meets even the modern eye for aesthetics and integrity.

While the Speedmaster is now synonymous with space exploration, its origins lie squarely in motorsport. At its inception, the model had no relation to NASA or the cosmos—it was designed purely as a chronograph for racing professionals. The Speedmaster was the first watch to feature a tachymeter scale on the bezel rather than the dial, marking a significant design innovation. In 1959, the model underwent a series of updates: the bezel was changed to a black aluminum insert, and the hands evolved from arrow to alpha shapes, improving legibility. When NASA sought a chronograph robust enough to endure the extreme conditions of space, the Speedmaster outperformed its competitors and was selected as the agency’s official watch. It famously accompanied astronauts during the first moon landing in 1969—a milestone that forever cemented its place in horological and human history.
