ロレックスの旗艦機種であるデイトジャスト。中でもRef.1603はステンレススチール製のエングレーブドベゼルを装備したモデルですが、最初期にのみ見られる通称「バンブーベゼル」がついた希少な個体です。前身機種であるRef.6605と比べると、1603のデザインを模索していた過渡期にのみ製造されたものであることがわかります。ブラックミラーダイヤルにクサビインデックスとドーフィンハンドを組み合わせたデザインは、オールドロレックスならではのクラシカルな魅力を放ちます。ロレックス純正のフォールデッドジュビリーブレスレットRef.78360、エンドリンク55が装着されています。

ムーブメントはCal.1560を搭載。テンワの慣性モーメントで進み遅れを制御する「フリースプラング」方式を採用しており、緩急針を廃した初のロレックス・クロノメータームーブメントとして高い評価を受けています。堅牢で信頼性が高く、現代においても安定した精度を誇ります。

The Datejust stands as Rolex’s flagship model, and among its many variations, the Ref.1603 is known for its stainless-steel engraved bezel. This particular example, however, features the rare early-production “Bamboo Bezel,” a design seen only in the very first generation. Produced during the transitional phase between its predecessor, Ref.6605, and the establishment of the 1603’s definitive form, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of the Datejust’s design language. The black mirror dial, fitted with dagger indexes and dauphine hands, exudes the classical charm unique to early Rolex timepieces. It is paired with a genuine Rolex folded Jubilee bracelet, Ref.78360, with end links 55.

The watch is powered by the Cal.1560 movement, Rolex’s first chronometer-grade caliber to adopt the free-sprung balance system—eliminating the traditional regulator in favor of variable inertia adjustment. Renowned for its durability and precision, it remains remarkably stable and accurate even by modern standards.

The case retains its crisp proportions, combining strength with understated elegance. The black gilt dial preserves a deep mirror gloss, showing no signs of cracking or deterioration. The “SWISS”-only marking at six o’clock identifies it as an early gilt variant, while the beige-toned luminous material remains perfectly intact and evenly aged—deserving of the highest praise. The hands and indexes maintain their original finish, with the surface plating still gleaming beautifully. This example has not been disassembled or serviced.

The production period of the bamboo bezel lasted less than two years, making it exceptionally rare.
