The Rolex Cellini Ref.4017, known as the “King Midas,” is a distinctive dress watch introduced in the 1970s, celebrated for its asymmetrical case design. Crafted in 18k yellow gold, the case measures approximately 27.5mm × 28.0mm (excluding the crown). Despite its compact proportions, the sculptural architecture gives it an impressive presence. A ruby-red dial, with its subtle Bordeaux tone, adds a touch of vibrancy, blending the brilliance of a jewel with the refined geometry of a timepiece.

The dial remains in mint condition, retaining its rich, lustrous hue. The case is preserved in an unpolished state, with the original edges and lines sharply intact, showcasing the design’s integrity and highlighting its originality. The piece demonstrates both rarity and authenticity. The watch has been disassembled, cleaned, and serviced by our workshop.

This Ref.4017 is attributed to the legendary designer Gérald Genta, whose creations such as the Royal Oak and Nautilus defined an era of iconic watchmaking. The asymmetrical King Midas case is said to have been inspired by the Parthenon in Greece, with its crown uniquely positioned on the left side. As one of Genta’s bold and unconventional designs, the Ref.4017 stands as a testament to Rolex’s willingness to experiment with form and artistry within the Cellini line.
