The central hands indicate the hours and minutes, along with the chronograph seconds and the central chronograph minute recorder. The matte black dial is arranged with a 12-hour chronograph recorder at 6 o’clock, running seconds at 9 o’clock, and a 24-hour indicator at 12 o’clock, allowing AM and PM to be read at a glance. The watch is fitted with a Ref.1162\/072 bracelet, which has a strong taper from 22mm down to 16mm. In 1959, the Speedmaster underwent a minor update: the bezel was changed to a black aluminum insert, and the hands were revised from broad arrow hands to alpha hands, improving legibility. When NASA began searching for a robust chronograph capable of withstanding the extreme conditions of space, the Speedmaster prevailed over several major competitors and was adopted as its official watch.
