COMMENT

1978年に発表されたサントスシリーズ。角形のサントスカレ、オクタゴン、ラウンドの3つのケース形状で展開された中から、本モデルは代表的なコンビ仕様のRef.2961です。1987年に登場した「ガルベ」以前の仕様で、ブレスレットには平面的なカットが施された初期型が装備されています。ダイヤルはわずかに艶のあるポーセリンカラーで、カルティエらしいローマ数字とミニッツトラック、そしてブルースチールのバトン針が組み合わされています。ムーブメントには自動巻きのCal.2671を搭載。ボックスが付属しております。

ケースは全体的に傷が非常に少なく、当時のシャープなプロポーションを良好に維持しています。ホワイトダイヤルはクラックのないオリジナルで、希少性の高いミントコンディションです。ブルースチールの針には経年変化が見られず、深みのある美しいブルーを保っています。弊社にて分解掃除済みです。

ケースのビス留め構造は、飛行機の機体を接合するネジから着想を得たデザインで、全体のフォルムには航空機を想起させる丸みとシャープさが共存しています。カルティエが創り出すデザインソースの多様性と、そこに込められた思想には、改めて驚嘆させられます。

BRAND

ビス留めのケースは飛行機のパーツを繋ぐネジがモチーフで、機体をイメージしてダイヤルなどの角がまるみを帯びたデザイン。現在ではジュエラーとして名高いカルティエですが、まだ懐中時計が主流だった1904年に本格的な腕時計を製作したのはカルティエが最初。アルベルト・サントス・デュモンという飛行家からの「飛行中に手を離さずに見ることができる時計がほしい。」という依頼が誕生のきっかけで、「サントス」の名を冠した腕時計が1911年に一般発売されました。

COMMENT

Released in 1978, the Santos collection was introduced with three distinctive case shapes: square, octagonal, and round. This model, Ref. 2961, is a quintessential two-tone version from that era. It predates the 1987 "Galbée" redesign and features the original flat-cut bracelet style of the early models. The dial has a subtle porcelain-like gloss, with Cartier’s signature Roman numerals, a minute track, and elegant blued steel baton hands. It is powered by the automatic Cal. 2671 movement and comes with its original box.

The case is in excellent condition with minimal signs of wear, maintaining its original sharp profile. The white dial is free from cracks and remains in pristine, original condition—a rarity in this model. The blued steel hands show no signs of aging and retain a deep, rich hue. The watch has been disassembled and cleaned by our team.

The signature screw-mounted bezel design draws inspiration from the rivets used in aircraft construction, while the case’s combination of curves and sharp edges evokes the streamlined forms of aviation engineering. Cartier’s ability to merge design language and functional symbolism continues to inspire admiration, even decades after its release.

The screw-mounted case of the Santos was inspired by the bolts used in aircraft construction, and its softly rounded dial and case edges reflect the contours of an aircraft’s fuselage. Though Cartier is now best known as a premier jeweler, it was also a pioneer in watchmaking—credited with creating one of the first wristwatches in 1904. The watch was developed at the request of famed aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, who needed a timepiece that could be read without removing his hands from the controls. In 1911, the “Santos” model was made available to the public, marking a significant chapter in the history of horology.
