COMMENT

1945年製、ミッドサイズのカラトラバケースを備えたオールドIWC。18Kローズゴールド製ケースに、ダイヤルは電着塗装によるホワイトが用いられています。砲弾型インデックスとパールドロップのミニッツトラックは、後年のオールドインターを象徴する意匠ですが、本作の時代ですでに完成された形で採用されており、端正な表情を形成しています。スモールセコンドは一段下がった構造となり、刻まれた精緻な溝からは、シンプルな中にも確かな造り込みが感じられます。ラグはバネ棒式ではなく固定ラグ仕様です。

ケースは良好なコンディションを保ってりいます。小傷は最小限に留まり、当時のプロポーションをしっかりと感じ取ることができる貴重な個体です。ダイヤルの状態も特筆すべき点で、この年代では経年による焼けや色味の変化が見られることが多い中、ホワイトの色調は当時の印象を保っています。プリントレターに劣化は見られず、全体として非常に整った印象です。針やインデックスは上面にくすみが見られます。古い機械ではありますが、弊社にて分解清掃済みで、動作は良好であることを確認しております。

現在「カラトラバケース」という呼称は、ケースとラグが一体化した造形を指すのが一般的ですが、パテック フィリップがその名を確立する以前、1920年代からIWCが同様の造形を手掛けていたとされる説も語られています。本作は、そうしたIWCの歴史的背景を感じさせる一本であり、この年式でここまでケース・ダイヤル双方の状態が揃った個体は、現行市場においても決して多くはありません。時代を考慮すれば、コンディションの完成度は際立っており、IWCの時計製造に対する真摯な姿勢を、実物から静かに伝えてくれる存在です。

BRAND

アメリカマサチューセッツ州ボストン出身の時計師、フロレンタイン・アリオスト・ジョーンズが1868年に創立したのが始まり。特徴的なデザインで今なお世界中で人気を誇る「パイロット・ウォッチ」コレクションなど、多くの人気シリーズを発売。磁気から時計を守る為の軟鉄製インナーケースや、IWC独自の"ぺラトン式"と呼ばれる両回転式自動巻機構はあまりに有名。

COMMENT

An old IWC from 1945 featuring a mid-size Calatrava-style case. The case is crafted in 18K rose gold, paired with a white dial produced by electroplating. Bullet-shaped hour markers and a pearl-drop minute track—design elements that later became synonymous with classic old IWC watches—are already present here in a fully matured form, creating a well-balanced and refined appearance. The small seconds is set on a recessed level, and the finely cut grooves surrounding it reflect a high level of craftsmanship within an otherwise restrained design. The watch is fitted with fixed lugs rather than spring bars.

The case remains in good condition. Minor surface marks are limited, allowing the original proportions of the period to be clearly appreciated, making this a particularly valuable example. The dial condition is especially noteworthy; while many watches from this era exhibit aging or discoloration, the white tone here has been preserved close to its original appearance. The printed lettering shows no noticeable degradation, contributing to an overall well-composed impression. There is some dullness visible on the upper surfaces of the hands and indices. Although this is an early movement, it has been fully serviced by our watchmaker and confirmed to be running well.

Today, the term “Calatrava case” generally refers to an integrated case-and-lug design, most closely associated with Patek Philippe. However, it is often noted that IWC had already been producing similar case designs as early as the 1920s, prior to Patek Philippe establishing the name. This watch reflects that historical background of IWC, and examples from this period showing such balanced condition in both case and dial are rarely encountered in the current market. Considering its age, the overall completeness of the condition stands out, quietly conveying IWC’s long-standing commitment to serious watchmaking through the watch itself.

IWC was founded in 1868 by Florentine Ariosto Jones, a watchmaker from Boston, Massachusetts. The brand continues to enjoy worldwide recognition for its distinctive designs, including iconic collections such as the Pilot’s Watches.
