当品は、ヨーロッパへ配備された米軍第六艦隊への、1965年の官給品でした。スピードマスターが軍用品のスペックをも十分にクリアしてきたことを知ることができます。第３世代のスピードマスターで、ケース径、ラグの形状、インダイアルのフォントや溝の細かさ等、「PROFESSIONAL」表記をする4th以降のものと比べると、その形状から小さなディティールまで違いがあります。ケースはHuguenin Freres製。ブレスレットは宇宙飛行士エド・ホワイトやゴードン・クーパーが着用していたことで知られるJB Champion製。形状が異なりますが、当時のアストロノーツスタイルでご使用いただけます。エンドピースにPAT No.が入っており、特許が取られていたことがわかります。

ケースは小さな打跡こそ見られますが、状態の良いものです。裏蓋のロゴや、２段の面取りエッジがはっきりしています。ベゼルは均一にエイジングが確認できます。数字は読み取れるので機能は果たします。ダイアルは傷が見られず状態が良いです。文字盤とベゼルのコントラストが素晴らしく、ヤレた印象は感じません。ホワイトプリントの針はエイジングにより多少色付いているものの、肉眼ではほとんど気になりません。ブレスレットは状態が良く完全に機能します。

夜光塗料が経年により、ネイビーウォッチらしいヘビーデューティーな雰囲気を醸し出しています。ツールウォッチとしての歴史を経、現在の日常に着用する楽しみは格別な時間です。スピードマスターの名声は、全てここプレムーンから始まりました。

今でこそ「Speedmasterイコール宇宙」という図式がすぐに浮かび上がりますが、当時は宇宙とは全く関係のない、純粋なモータースポーツ用の時計として誕生。また、スピードマスターは、ダイヤルではなく外周ベゼルにタキメーターを表示した世界で初めての時計と言われています。1959年、スピードマスターはマイナーチェンジをします。ベゼルがアルミニウムの黒色ベースとなり、針の形状がアロー針からアルファ針に変更されたことで、より視認性が高まっています。NASAは宇宙での過酷な環境にも耐えうる丈夫なクロノグラフを探しており、名だたる強豪に勝ったスピードマスターを公式時計として採用。その後1969年人類初の月面着陸の際、スピードマスターを着用していたことは有名な話。

This piece was an official issue to the US Navy Sixth Fleet deployed in Europe in 1965. It demonstrates how the Speedmaster has thoroughly met military specifications. As a third-generation Speedmaster, it differs in case diameter, lug shape, dial font, and groove finesse from the fourth-generation onwards bearing the "PROFESSIONAL" designation, showing variances in shape down to the smallest details. The case is made by Huguenin Freres, while the bracelet, although different in shape, is made by JB Champion, known for being worn by astronauts like Ed White and Gordon Cooper, making it suitable for the astronaut style of that era. The end pieces bear a PAT No., indicating patented design.

While there are minor marks on the case, it's in good condition. The case back logo and the double-beveled edges are distinct. The bezel shows uniform aging, fulfilling its function with readable numbers. The dial is in excellent condition without scratches, boasting a remarkable contrast between the dial and bezel without any worn-out impressions. The white-printed hands show slight discoloration due to aging, but it's hardly noticeable to the naked eye. The bracelet is in good condition and functions perfectly.

The aged luminous paint adds to its heavy-duty navy watch vibe. Having traversed its history as a tool watch, wearing it in everyday life is a special experience. The fame of the Speedmaster all began with the "pre-moon" era.

While today the equation "Speedmaster equals space" immediately comes to mind, it was originally born as a pure motorsport watch with no connection to space. Additionally, the Speedmaster was the world's first watch to display a tachymeter on the outer bezel instead of the dial. In 1959, the Speedmaster underwent a minor change, featuring an aluminum black base bezel and changing from arrow hands to alpha hands for improved visibility. NASA was seeking a durable chronograph capable of withstanding the harsh conditions of space, and the Speedmaster, which triumphed over formidable rivals, was officially adopted as their watch of choice. The famous story of the Speedmaster being worn during the first moon landing in 1969 solidified its legendary status.
