COMMENT

1978年に発表されたサントスシリーズ。角形のサントスカレ、オクタゴン、ラウンドの3つのケース形状で展開された中から、本モデルは代表的なコンビ仕様のRef.2961です。1987年に登場した「ガルベ」以前の仕様で、ブレスレットには平面的なカットが施された初期型が装備されています。ダイヤルはわずかに艶のあるポーセリンカラーで、カルティエらしいローマ数字とミニッツトラック、そしてブルースチールのバトン針が組み合わされています。ムーブメントには自動巻きのCal.2671を搭載。ボックスと冊子が付属しております。ギャランティーは付属しません。

ケースは全体的に傷が非常に少なく、当時のシャープなプロポーションを良好に維持しています。ホワイトダイヤルはクラックが見られます。ブルースチールの針には経年変化が見られず、深みのある美しいブルーを保っています。弊社にて分解掃除済みです。

ケースのビス留め構造は、飛行機の機体を接合するネジから着想を得たデザインで、全体のフォルムには航空機を想起させる丸みとシャープさが共存しています。カルティエが創り出すデザインソースの多様性と、そこに込められた思想には、改めて驚嘆させられます。

BRAND

ビス留めのケースは飛行機のパーツを繋ぐネジがモチーフで、機体をイメージしてダイヤルなどの角がまるみを帯びたデザイン。現在ではジュエラーとして名高いカルティエですが、まだ懐中時計が主流だった1904年に本格的な腕時計を製作したのはカルティエが最初。アルベルト・サントス・デュモンという飛行家からの「飛行中に手を離さずに見ることができる時計がほしい。」という依頼が誕生のきっかけで、「サントス」の名を冠した腕時計が1911年に一般発売されました。

COMMENT

Introduced in 1978, the Santos collection was offered in three distinct case shapes—square (Carré), octagonal, and round. This example, the Ref.2961, represents the signature two-tone configuration. It predates the later “Galbée” version introduced in 1987 and features the earlier flat-link bracelet with planar cuts characteristic of the first generation. The dial displays a subtle porcelain-like sheen, adorned with Cartier’s classic Roman numerals, a railway minute track, and blued steel baton hands. It is powered by the automatic Cal.2671 movement. The watch comes with its original box and booklet, though the guarantee paper is not included.

The case remains in excellent condition overall, showing minimal signs of wear while retaining its sharp, period-correct proportions. The white dial shows some visible cracks, yet the blued steel hands have not aged and still exhibit a rich, deep hue. Fully serviced by our watchmakers.

The screw-set case construction was inspired by the rivets used in aircraft fuselages, blending aerodynamic curves with structural precision. The harmony between its rounded and angular elements evokes the spirit of aviation itself. Once again, Cartier’s ability to transform functional engineering into timeless elegance stands as a testament to the brand’s creative genius and design philosophy.

The screw-mounted case of the Santos was inspired by the bolts used in aircraft construction, and its softly rounded dial and case edges reflect the contours of an aircraft’s fuselage. Though Cartier is now best known as a premier jeweler, it was also a pioneer in watchmaking—credited with creating one of the first wristwatches in 1904. The watch was developed at the request of famed aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, who needed a timepiece that could be read without removing his hands from the controls. In 1911, the “Santos” model was made available to the public, marking a significant chapter in the history of horology.
