The Grand Seiko “61GS” debuted as Japan’s first 36,000 vph high-beat automatic wristwatch. This example is an early Ref. 6146-8000, distinguished by the absence of the “36000” text on the dial—an uncommon and sought-after configuration. The winding rotor is engraved with “GRAND SEIKO,” reflecting the meticulous craftsmanship characteristic of the period. While the case has a gently rounded profile, the top surfaces and lug tips feature sharp, well-defined facets that embody the tension and precision associated with Grand Seiko design. The silver sunray dial displays an elegant radial finish, and the black lines applied to the hands and indexes further enhance legibility.
The case retains its original hairline finishing and crisp edges on the upper surfaces, remaining in notably good condition. Minor signs of use are present but do not compromise the integrity of the finishing. The caseback engravings are sharp, and the medallion is well preserved. The dial shows virtually no aging, maintaining an even, attractive sheen. The hands remain in excellent condition with no noticeable oxidation or scratches, and the black printing on the indexes is intact. Fully serviced by our watchmaker.
Powered by the Cal. 6146A—an engineering achievement that embodied the pinnacle of Seiko’s mechanical innovation of the era—the 61GS is widely regarded as the definitive automatic Grand Seiko. Delivering high-beat accuracy, comfort on the wrist, and enduring reliability, it represents a perfectly balanced masterpiece. This watch offers a chance to experience the refined beauty of Grand Seiko’s mechanical golden age.
