COMMENT

1978年から発表されたサントスシリーズ。角形のサントス、オクタゴン、ラウンドの3形状の展開から、代表的なコンビのサントスRef.2961です。1987年に切り替わったガルベと比べ、平面カットされたブレスレットが装備されています。ダイヤルはポーセリンカラー。カルティエのアイコニックなローマ数字とミニッツトラック、ブルースチールのバトン針が組み合わされています。自動巻ムーブメントであるCal.2671を搭載しています。

ケース、ベゼル、ブレスレットはいずれもスーパーミントコンディションで、目立つ傷や打痕は見受けられません。ベゼル周りによくみられる擦り傷がなく、ビス周りの状態は良好でクリアな状態を維持しています。ダイヤルはクラックのない状態を保ち艶やかな印象を放ちます。針・インデックスのコンディションも整っています。弊社にて分解清掃済みです。

ビス留めのケースは飛行機のパーツを繋ぐネジから着想を得たもので、ダイヤルなどの角がまるみを帯びたデザインは機体を表しています。カルティエのデザインソースのバリエーションの豊富さには、感服させられるものがあります。

ビス留めのケースは飛行機のパーツを繋ぐネジがモチーフで、機体をイメージしてダイヤルなどの角がまるみを帯びたデザイン。現在ではジュエラーとして名高いカルティエですが、まだ懐中時計が主流だった1904年に本格的な腕時計を製作したのはカルティエが最初。アルベルト・サントス・デュモンという飛行家からの「飛行中に手を離さずに見ることができる時計がほしい。」という依頼が誕生のきっかけで、「サントス」の名を冠した腕時計が1911年に一般発売されました。

COMMENT

Introduced in 1978, the Santos line was developed in three distinct forms: square, octagonal, and round. This example is the representative two-tone Santos Ref. 2961. Compared with the later Galbée model introduced in 1987, it is fitted with the earlier flat-cut bracelet. The dial features a porcelain tone, combining Cartier’s iconic Roman numerals and chemin de fer minute track with blued steel baton hands. It is powered by the automatic Cal. 2671 .

The case, bezel, and bracelet are all preserved in super mint condition, with no noticeable scratches or dents. The bezel is free from the surface scuffs commonly seen around its edges, and the screws remain crisp and well defined. The dial shows no cracks and retains a lustrous appearance. The hands and indexes are in excellent condition. Fully serviced by our watchmaker.

The exposed screws on the bezel draw inspiration from the rivets used in aircraft construction, while the softened angles of the dial and case evoke the form of an aircraft fuselage. The breadth of Cartier’s design vocabulary is evident in such details, reflecting a maison capable of translating technical inspiration into enduring aesthetic language.

The Santos was born from a request made to Cartier in 1904 by the aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, who sought a timepiece he could read without removing his hands from the controls during flight. At a time when pocket watches still dominated, Cartier created one of the earliest purpose-built wristwatches. The model bearing the name “Santos” was released to the public in 1911. Today celebrated worldwide as a prestigious jeweler, Cartier’s early commitment to wristwatch design remains a defining chapter in its history.
