スピードマスターの自動巻クロノグラフを象徴する「Mark III」Ref.176.002は、1971年頃に登場した一本です。重厚なトノーケースは約41×51mm級の存在感を持ち、火口のような独特のケース形状から「ボルケーノ」の愛称でも知られています。深みのあるブルーサンレイダイヤルは、光の当たり方によって表情を変え、オレンジの60分積算計針によるアクセントや24時間表示を備えたインダイヤルとともに1970年代らしい未来的な雰囲気を演出します。搭載ムーブメントはCal.1040です。

コンディションは良好です。ケースは軽微な使用傷こそ見られますが、上面と側面のヘアライン仕上げがしっかり残り、エッジも美しく保たれています。ダイヤルは色味の変化が極めて少なく、ブルー特有の鮮やかな発色を維持。針とインデックスはクリアな質感を保ち、夜光も自然なエイジングに収まっています。ベゼルや各ディテールの状態も良く、総合的に見て高い保存状態を誇る個体です。弊社にて分解清掃済みです。

Mark IIIは、スピードマスターの中でも異色の存在です。大型のトノーケースやセンター分積算を備えたCal.1040など、1970年代らしい挑戦的な要素が随所に見られます。なかでもブルーダイヤルは流通数が少なく、ここまで鮮やかな色味と良好なコンディションを保った個体は年々見つけることが難しくなっています。初期自動巻スピードマスターならではの魅力を存分に味わえる一本です。

BRAND

スピードマスターシリーズで初めて自動巻ムーブメントを搭載したモデル。今でこそ「Speedmasterイコール宇宙」という図式がすぐに浮かび上がりますが、当時は宇宙とは全く関係のない、純粋なモータースポーツ用の時計として誕生。また、スピードマスターは、ダイヤルではなく外周ベゼルにタキメーターを表示した世界で初めての時計と言われています。NASAは宇宙での過酷な環境にも耐えうる丈夫なクロノグラフを探しており、名だたる強豪に勝ったスピードマスターを公式時計として採用。その後1969年人類初の月面着陸の際、スピードマスターを着用していたことは有名なお話。

The Speedmaster Mark III Ref. 176.002, introduced around 1971, stands as one of the defining automatic chronographs in the Speedmaster lineage. Its substantial tonneau-shaped case measures approximately 41 × 51 mm and is often nicknamed the "Volcano" due to its distinctive crater-like profile. The deep blue sunburst dial shifts beautifully with changing light, while the orange 60-minute chronograph counter hand and 24-hour subdial contribute to the futuristic aesthetic characteristic of the 1970s. Powering the watch is the Omega Cal. 1040 automatic chronograph movement.

The condition is excellent. The case shows only light signs of wear, with the original brushed finishing clearly visible across both the top and sides, while the edges remain sharp and well defined. The dial retains its vivid blue coloration with virtually no noticeable fading. The hands and indexes remain crisp and clean, and the luminous material has aged naturally and evenly. The bezel and surrounding details are equally well preserved, making this a particularly strong example overall. Fully serviced by our watchmaker.

Among the many Speedmaster variants, the Mark III occupies a unique position. Its oversized tonneau case and the Cal. 1040 movement with central minute recording reflect the bold and experimental spirit of 1970s watchmaking. Blue-dial examples are especially scarce, and finding one that retains such vibrant color and overall condition has become increasingly difficult. This is a highly desirable example that allows the wearer to fully appreciate the character and appeal of Omega's early automatic Speedmasters.

The Speedmaster series first introduced automatic movements with models such as the Mark III, expanding the collection beyond its original hand-wound roots. While today the name Speedmaster is closely associated with space exploration, the model was initially conceived purely for motorsport timing. It is also widely regarded as the first wristwatch to place the tachymeter scale on the external bezel rather than the dial. Famously adopted by NASA after rigorous testing, the Speedmaster accompanied astronauts during the 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing, cementing its place in horological history.
