レーシングウォッチの名門であったホイヤーが、ロレックスとチューダーのサブマリーナやオメガのシーマスターの独占していたダイバーズウォッチ市場に向けて産出した初のモデルRef.844です。ケースはフランスのメーカーMONNIN社に外注したもので、リューズガードに丸みのある独自のディテールです。最先端の深度定格と逆回転防止ベゼルなど、サブマリーナと多くの特徴が重なりますが、ロレックスは39.5mm径に対し、844はかなり大きく42 mm径です。時針はコブラハンド、professionalのフォントとMADE IN FRANCEの表記は、最初期のモデルに見られるものです。この年式の時計に珍しく、ガラス風防を備えています。この時代のダイバーズウォッチは、サブマリーナでさえプラスチック風防だったことから、先進性が感じられます。ヴィンテージホイヤーを取扱う名店、TAG1000DIVER.COMの修理明細書が付属します。

Heuer, once renowned for its racing watches, ventured into the diver's watch market monopolized by Rolex's Submariner and Tudor and Omega's Seamaster with its inaugural model, Ref.844. The case was outsourced to the French manufacturer MONNIN, featuring a uniquely rounded crown guard detail. While sharing many features with the Submariner, such as cutting-edge depth rating and a unidirectional rotating bezel, the 844 boasts a considerably larger diameter of 42mm compared to Rolex's 39.5mm. The hour hand is in the Cobra style, and the "professional" font along with "MADE IN FRANCE" inscription are indicative of early models. Remarkably, this timepiece from this era is equipped with a glass crystal, showing its advancement considering even the Submariner had a plastic crystal at that time. The case maintains its supple shape without signs of polishing, with the bezel, prone to damage, remaining in excellent condition, a highlight of this piece. The dial shows no signs of deterioration and remains in beautiful condition. The lume on the indices has aged evenly, indicating no tampering. Together with the hands' luminescence, they exhibit a uniform beige patina. The bracelet shows minimal stretching, a sign of its high quality. Heuer faced financial difficulties due to the "quartz crisis" in the mid-1970s. In response to numerous requests from customers for high-quality diver's watches at affordable prices in the mid to late 1970s, the birth of the 844 marked the company's entry into production. It was a significant challenge for Heuer, but the 844 enjoyed strong sales, leading to the cessation of outsourcing to MONNIN and the commencement of in-house manufacturing in Switzerland.
