第二精工舎が1969年に製造した手巻き式グランドセイコー、通称“45GS”。ケースは多面カットが施されたステンレススチール製で、鏡面とヘアラインの仕上げを巧みに切り替えた精緻な造形が特徴です。シルバーのサンレイダイヤルにバーインデックスとドーフィンハンドを組み合わせたクラシカルな構成。針とインデックスのセンターにブラックのラインが入り、精密な読時性を確保しています。ムーブメントは名機Cal.4522Aを搭載。この機械はV.F.A（Very Fine Adjusted）や天文台クロノメーターモデルの基礎となった最高峰のキャリバーであり、1969年12月、クオーツショック直前における機械式時計技術の集大成といえる完成度を誇ります。

ケースはわずかな使用傷が見られるものの、大きな打痕のないグッドコンディション。ラグや側面の稜線は明瞭で、ファセットの美しさがしっかりと保たれています。裏蓋の刻印は鮮明で、全体として優れた保存状態です。ダイヤルはマットホワイトの風合いを保ち、均一な質感を維持。針はわずかな経年のみで鏡面の艶を残し、インデックスのブラックプリントが崩れなく残っています。弊社にて分解清掃済みです。

手巻きの45GSは、同時期に諏訪精工舎が製造した自動巻きの61GSと並び、日本の時計製造史における金字塔です。両舎が切磋琢磨する中で誕生したこのモデルは、天文台クロノメーターコンクールで優秀な成績を収め、機械式時計の精度限界を押し上げました。その実績はやがてクオーツの時代を切り開く原動力となり、まさに“最後にして最高”の機械式グランドセイコーと呼ぶにふさわしい一本です。

COMMENT

Often referred to as the “45GS,” this hand-wound Grand Seiko was produced by the Daini Seikosha factory in 1969. The stainless-steel case features sharply defined multifaceted surfaces, alternating between polished and brushed finishes to create a highly architectural form. The silver sunray dial combines baton indexes with dauphine hands in a classic layout, while the black line running through the center of both hands and markers enhances clarity and precision in reading the time. Inside is the celebrated Cal. 4522A, a movement that served as the foundation for the V.F.A. (Very Fine Adjusted) models and observatory chronometer pieces. Completed in December 1969, just before the advent of the quartz revolution, it represents the pinnacle of Japanese mechanical watchmaking.

The case shows light signs of use but no major dents, preserving its crisp geometry. The facets along the lugs and case flanks remain sharp and visually striking. The caseback engravings are clear, reflecting careful preservation. The dial retains its matte white character with an even texture throughout. The hands show only minimal aging and maintain their polished brilliance, while the black printing on the indexes remains intact. Fully serviced by our watchmaker.

The hand-wound 45GS stands alongside the automatic 61GS—produced in parallel by Suwa Seikosha—as a landmark in Japanese horological history. Born from the rivalry between the two Seiko factories, the model achieved excellent results at observatory chronometer competitions and pushed the limits of mechanical precision. Its achievements ultimately paved the way for the development of quartz technology, making this piece truly deserving of the title “the final and greatest” of the classical mechanical Grand Seikos.
