グランドセイコー・セカンドに後期モデル、Ref.5722-9011です。 セカンドモデルが発売されたのはファーストモデルの発売から7年経った1967年。ファーストモデルと比較すると、カレンダー機能（早送り機能付き）を搭載、ケース裏蓋を圧入式のスナップバックからねじ込み式のスクリューバックに変更されています。後期モデルにあたるこちらは、クロノメーター表記がなくなり、GS表記へとなっています。また9011になることで裏蓋の「GC」の表記が「CAP GOLD」となるなど細かい調整が入っています。

ケースはスレンレスに260ミクロンの金張りを施したキャップゴールド製。ラグを太く設計することで耐久性も向上が図られており、機能性、素材、デザインから生まれる重厚な印象は、所有欲が満たされます。肉厚なケースにはシルバーのサンレイダイアルが収められています。鏡面仕上げされた多面カットの針とドーフィンハンドとバーインデックスは、ダイアルとのマッチングも素晴らしいです。

ダイヤル表面に目立つ変色や腐食は確認できず、サンレイ仕上げの質感が明瞭に残っています。プリントの滲みや剥離は見られません。針はメッキの剥がれがなく、広いファセットの印象的な鏡面の輪郭が保たれています。インデックスは全体として光沢を維持しており、大きく目立つ打痕はありません。ケースはエッジが整い、ラグの面構成がはっきりと確認できます。裏蓋の刻印は鮮明で、GSメダリオンも立体感を保っています。

機械式国産時計のひとつの完成形と言えるモデルで、ムーブメントやケース、文字盤などの造りの良さはピークに達し、スイス製品と比較した際に独自性を見て取れます。

COMMENT

Ref.5722-9011 represents the later execution of the Grand Seiko Second. Introduced in 1964, four years after the First model, the Second brought notable technical updates: the addition of a date function with quickset capability and the transition from a snap-back case to a screw-down caseback. In this later configuration, the “Chronometer” designation was omitted in favor of the GS signature. The reference change to 9011 also reflects subtle revisions, including the caseback engraving shifting from “GC” to “CAP GOLD.”

The case is constructed in stainless steel with a 260-micron gold-capped finish. Broader lugs enhance durability, and the combined effect of functionality, material choice, and assertive design results in a watch of substantial presence. Within the robust case sits a silver sunburst dial. The sharply faceted, mirror-polished hands—together with multi-faceted baton indexes—interact beautifully with the dial’s radial finish, demonstrating the precision and aesthetic discipline characteristic of Grand Seiko during this era.

The dial shows no notable discoloration or corrosion, and the sunburst texture remains clearly defined. Printing is crisp, without bleeding or loss. The hands retain their plating, and the broad polished facets remain well outlined. The indexes preserve their luster with no significant dents. The case edges are well formed, with the lug geometry distinctly visible. Caseback engravings are sharp, and the GS medallion maintains its relief. Fully serviced by our watchmaker.

This reference may be regarded as one of the culminating expressions of Japan’s mechanical watchmaking in the 1960s.
