It houses the Cal.1151, based on the ETA/Valjoux 7751, a cam-operated chronograph renowned for its reliability and ease of maintenance. The arrow-shaped central seconds hand functions as the chronograph hand, while the black-and-white pointer indicates the date. At 12 o’clock sit the day, month, and 30-minute counter; at 9 o’clock the small seconds and 24-hour indicator; and at 6 o’clock the 12-hour counter with moonphase—an information-rich yet highly legible layout.

The case shows minimal noticeable wear, and the twisted lugs retain their crisp definition. Although now synonymous with space exploration, the Speedmaster was originally conceived purely as a motorsport timing instrument, unrelated to space. It is known as the first wristwatch to display a tachymeter on an external bezel rather than on the dial. In 1959 the model underwent a minor redesign, adopting a black aluminium bezel insert and transitioning from arrow to alpha hands to enhance legibility. When NASA sought a chronograph capable of withstanding the extreme conditions of space, the Speedmaster prevailed over formidable competitors and was officially selected. Its presence on the wrists of astronauts during the first lunar landing in 1969 remains one of the most celebrated chapters in horological history.
