40mmという当時としては規格外のケース径を備え、素材には希少性の高いステイブライトが用いられています。3ピース構造のケースは、三段にわたりステップし、外周へ薄く張り出す輪郭が軽快さを生みます。ダイヤルはブラックグレーのツートンで、特徴的なアラビアインデックスは愛嬌のある「7」のフォントが印象的です。チャプターリングはギルトで、セクターデザインのスモールセコンドはやや中心寄りに配されています。針はシルバーカラーのアルファハンド。当時のレザーストラップとタグが付属します。

NEW OLD STOCKとして保管されてきた個体で、ダイヤルの質感が当時のまま残っています。ケースは全体の輪郭を損なうようなダメージが見当たらず、ステップベゼルの立体感を楽しめます。ストラップは当時物で、使用感は感じられません。分解掃除は現状を維持するためしておりません。

COMMENT

This piece features an oversized 40mm case—an unconventional diameter for its era—crafted from the highly durable Staybrite steel. The three-piece case construction is defined by a stepped bezel composed of three tiers, with the outermost edge projecting lightly outward to create a sense of visual lightness. The dial presents a black-and-grey two-tone layout, with charming Arabic numerals distinguished by the particularly expressive “7.” A gilt chapter ring and a slightly off-centre sector-style small seconds further enrich the composition. The watch is fitted with silver-coloured alpha hands and retains its period leather strap and original tag.

Preserved as NEW OLD STOCK, the dial has retained its natural texture and depth. The case shows no damage that would compromise the original contours, allowing the stepped bezel to display its sculptural form. The period strap exhibits no signs of wear consistent with use. No servicing has been carried out in order to maintain the watch in its original state.

This oversized “Disco Volante” by ROAMER, produced in the 1930s, represents a step beyond the conventions of dress watches of the time. A 40mm case in this period was not merely “large,” but an expression of design experimentation. The thin, spreading disc-shaped form—also seen in creations by Universal Genève—captures the era’s aesthetic sensibilities and continues to hold a striking presence even today.
