COMMENT

GRAND SEIKO Ref.4420-9990は、1967年に登場した44GSに属する手巻きモデルです。44GSは、後のグランドセイコーに受け継がれるケース造形の基礎を築いた重要なモデルとして知られています。本機はゴールドキャップ仕様のケースを備え、ステンレススチールとは異なる柔らかな色味と、当時の上級機らしい雰囲気を感じさせます。ダイヤルはシルバーのサンレイ仕上げで、12時位置の立体的なインデックス、太く力強いドーフィンハンド、6時側のGSロゴとGrand Seiko表記が端正に配置されています。ムーブメントは手巻きのCal.4420Bを搭載しています。

ケースは使用に伴う小傷が見られますが、44GSらしい力強いラグのラインと、平面を活かしたケースフォルムはしっかりと残っています。シルバーサンレイダイヤルは光の角度によって穏やかな濃淡を見せ、経年の影響も少ない良好な状態です。針とインデックスはくすみが少なく、鏡面の輝きを維持しています。リューズにSEIKOの刻印が入り、裏蓋のGSメダリオンは良好に残っています。弊社にて分解清掃済みです。

Ref.4420-9990の魅力は、44GSという歴史的なケースデザインを、キャップゴールド仕様で楽しめる点にあります。44GSは短い期間のみ製造されたモデルであり、第二精工舎によるグランドセイコーとしても重要な位置づけを持っています。後にキングセイコーへと連なる亀戸工場の系譜を感じさせる内容で、グランドセイコーの歴史を語るうえでも見逃せない一本です。

1960年代は、機械式腕時計は完成期とも言えるほどの発展を遂げた時期で、セイコーは精度コンクールの分野でも量産の分野でも、世界に追いつき、追いぬいた時代であった。同時に、「時計の電子化」が進展し、1969（昭和44）年12月にセイコーが世界初のクオーツ（水晶）腕時計を発売することにより、機械式腕時計からクオーツ腕時計へと大きく舵を切ろうとする時期でもあった

COMMENT

The sunburst dial, radiating with fine hairline finishing, carries a timelessly elegant character and a refined presence. The hands are Seiko’s signature three-faceted dauphine design, while the indexes feature sharply cut facets that capture and reflect light from every angle. The case, finished in gold-top, strikes a balance between simplicity and luxury.

The dial shows only minimal aging, free of blemishes and retaining the period charm of its era. The hands preserve their polished luster, and the multi-faceted indexes return light vividly. The case exhibits only slight traces of use, remaining overall in excellent condition. Serviced and disassembled by our watchmaker.

This piece is the King Seiko 44 Chronometer, manufactured in May 1966 and regarded as the pinnacle of the King Seiko line. On later models such as Ref. 4420-9990, the distinctive block-letter “Chronometer” inscription of this period can be observed. Its restrained, uncompromising design embodies a distinctly Japanese sense of aesthetics, and its enduring purity gives it an aura that transcends time.

King Seiko was developed at Daini Seikosha in Kameido in August 1961 as a high-grade line positioned just below Grand Seiko. It remains an essential part of Seiko’s history, celebrated as one of the brand’s most important and enduring creations.
