COMMENT
This Constellation features a full guilloché dial executed in a two-tone layout. The center and outer ring exhibit distinct textures, with the finely engraved patterns creating shifting shadows that enhance the dial’s depth and character. Guilloché is a decorative technique in which patterns are cut directly into the metal itself; because it relies on engraving rather than paint, it is far less susceptible to moisture or surface degradation, allowing the material’s natural brilliance to endure over time. The diamond-shaped indexes paired with classical dauphine hands lend the piece an elegant and dignified presence. The bracelet is an early “beads of rice” type, notable for its rare sliding clasp.
Within the two-tone dial, only the painted inner section has developed patina, transforming into a deep black tone. This creates a striking contrast reminiscent of mid-century tuxedo dials. The interplay between this darkened center and the lightly aged cream tone of the outer ring results in a charming vintage expression. The case maintains excellent proportions, with crisp edges preserved on both the lugs and bezel. The hands and indexes retain their brightness. Fully serviced by our watchmaker.
The dramatic tonal separation seen here—created not by design but by decades of natural aging—is something even the original makers could never have anticipated. Such a one-of-a-kind appearance, completed only after many decades, represents the true delight of vintage watch collecting. In an era where modern watches are often evaluated strictly by year or specification, the ability to appreciate this singular, irreplicable ageing pattern speaks to a discerning eye.
