50年間作られたスペードマスターだからこそ、マイナーチェンジを繰り返した経緯があり、細かなディティールの変化を見つける楽しみがあります。それがロングセラーの理由のひとつ。スピードマスターの中では製造期間の長い方であった5thですが、ステップダイアルを備えているものと拘ると年式がぐっと狭まります。立体感のあるダイアルと、ツイストラグのコンビネーションはムーンウォッチでしか味わえない意匠です。ケースバックには人気のストレートラインと呼ばれる人気の刻印で、中でもサークルに“Apollo XI”が入ったものは最も希少とされています。アーカイブの写しが付属します。

今でこそ「Speedmasterイコール宇宙」という図式がすぐに浮かび上がりますが、当時は宇宙とは全く関係のない、純粋なモータースポーツ用の時計として誕生。また、スピードマスターは、ダイヤルではなく外周ベゼルにタキメーターを表示した世界で初めての時計と言われています。1959年、スピードマスターはマイナーチェンジをします。ベゼルがアルミニウムの黒色ベースとなり、針の形状がアロー針からアルファ針に変更されたことで、より視認性が高まっています。NASAは宇宙での過酷な環境にも耐えうる丈夫なクロノグラフを探しており、名だたる強豪に勝ったスピードマスターを公式時計として採用。その後1969年人類初の月面着陸の際、スピードマスターを着用していたことは有名なお話。

The Speedmaster Ref.145.022, introduced in 1968, is the 5th model of the Speedmaster series, which has been in production for over 50 years. This longevity has allowed for numerous minor changes over time, providing enthusiasts with the joy of discovering subtle variations in detail. This is one of the reasons for its status as a long-standing bestseller. While the 5th model had a relatively long production period among Speedmasters, narrowing down to those with a stepped dial significantly reduces the years. The combination of a three-dimensional dial and twisted lugs is a design feature unique to the Moonwatch. The case back features the popular engraving known as the "straight line," with the circle containing "Apollo XI" being the most sought after and rarest variant. Archive documentation is included.

The case exhibits a superb proportion without any noticeable polishing history. It has minimal scratches, and the edges of the twisted lugs are sharp. The bezel, prone to damage, remains deep black and vibrant. The dial is flawless, showing no signs of damage, and the white print on the hands is pristine. The indices have aged to a rich beige hue, adding to the vintage appeal, and the fact that they haven't turned black is highly commendable. While today the equation "Speedmaster equals Space" is immediately recognizable, it's important to note that in its early generations, the Speedmaster was born purely as a motorsports watch with no connection to space. Additionally, the Speedmaster is known as the first watch in the world to feature a tachymeter on the external bezel rather than the dial. In 1959, the Speedmaster underwent a minor change, transitioning to a black aluminum base for the bezel and changing the needle shape from arrow to alpha, improving visibility. NASA was seeking a robust chronograph capable of withstanding the harsh environment of space, and the Speedmaster, having triumphed over numerous contenders, was officially adopted as the space watch. It's a well-known story that the Speedmaster was worn during the first manned moon landing in 1969.
