オメガのレジェンド、スピードマスターRef.2998。リューズガードが無く、ストレートラグが際立つ無骨なケースデザインが特徴です。4mmプッシュボタンが絶妙なバランスで、初期スピードマスターの存在感を高めています。ヴィンテージスピードマスターならではのシルバーカラーのアルファハンドが、このモデルに一層の趣を添えています。日本ではキャタピラーと呼ばれるフラットリンクブレスレットは、Ref.7912、エンドリンク6、クラスプデイト61/3とともに装備されています。搭載ムーブメントはCal.321で、ピラーホイール式を採用しているため製造コストが高く、チラネジテンプと巻き上げヒゲを備えた高級仕様です。

ベゼルには写真で確認できる通り、程よい使用傷とカラーフェードがヴィンテージらしい雰囲気を醸し出しています。ケースは大きな打痕などなく、プロポーションが非常に良好です。ダイヤルは理想的な状態です。ほぼ無傷で、良い状態を維持しています。夜光塗料は経年により一部変色し、ヴィンテージ感を引き立てています。付属のキャタピラーブレスレットはエラスティックファンクションが正常に機能しています。弊社にて分解掃除済みで、すべてが正常に作動します。

Ref.2998は、初代スピードマスターCK2915の流れを受け継ぎながら、後のプロフェッショナルケースへ移行する前の、初期スピードマスターを代表する重要なリファレンスです。NASAが月へ持ち込んだ世代よりさらに前にあたり、リューズガードを持たないストレートラグケース、アルファハンドが揃うことで、Ref.2998ならではの緊張感あるデザインを楽しめます。Ref.2998は枝番によって針やベゼル、ディテールに細かな違いがあり、状態と仕様の整った個体を見つけることが難しくなっています。キャタピラーブレスレットまで当時の構成で揃った本個体は、スピードマスターの歴史性、オリジナリティ、実用性を兼ね備えた、コレクション性の高い一本です

今でこそ「Speedmasterイコール宇宙」という図式がすぐに浮かび上がりますが、当時は宇宙とは全く関係のない、純粋なモータースポーツ用の時計として誕生。また、スピードマスターは、ダイヤルではなく外周ベゼルにタキメーターを表示した世界で初めての時計と言われています。1959年、スピードマスターはマイナーチェンジをします。ベゼルがアルミニウムの黒色ベースとなり、針の形状がアロー針からアルファ針に変更されたことで、より視認性が高まっています。NASAは宇宙での過酷な環境にも耐えうる丈夫なクロノグラフを探しており、名だたる強豪に勝ったスピードマスターを公式時計として採用。その後1969年人類初の月面着陸の際、スピードマスターを着用していたことは有名な話。

COMMENT

The Omega Speedmaster Ref.2998 is one of the legendary early Speedmaster references. Its case is defined by the absence of crown guards and a straight-lug design, giving it a robust and purposeful appearance. The 4mm pushers are beautifully balanced within the overall case design, enhancing the presence of this early Speedmaster. The silver-tone alpha hands, a defining feature of vintage Speedmasters from this period, add further character to the model. The flat-link bracelet, often referred to in Japan as the “Caterpillar” bracelet, is fitted with Ref.7912, No.6 end links, and a clasp dated 61/3. The watch is powered by the Cal.321, a column-wheel chronograph movement known for its costly construction, featuring a screwed balance and Breguet overcoil hairspring.

As shown in the photographs, the bezel has developed light wear and attractive color fading, giving the watch a strong vintage character. The case has no major dents and retains excellent proportions. The dial is in ideal condition, remaining almost free of visible damage and beautifully preserved overall. The luminous material has aged with some natural tonal variation, further enhancing the vintage atmosphere. The accompanying flat-link bracelet retains its elastic function and works properly. Fully serviced by our watchmaker, and all functions are operating correctly.

The Ref.2998 is an important early Speedmaster reference, continuing the lineage of the first-generation CK2915 while preceding the later Professional-style case. It belongs to a generation earlier than the Speedmasters taken to the Moon by NASA, and its straight-lug case without crown guards, paired with alpha hands, gives the Ref.2998 its distinctive sense of tension and balance. Details such as the hands, bezel, and other specifications vary depending on the sub-reference, making well-preserved and correctly configured examples increasingly difficult to find. Complete with its period-correct flat-link bracelet, this example brings together historical importance, originality, and practical usability, making it a highly collectible Speedmaster.

Today, the Speedmaster is immediately associated with space exploration, but it was originally created purely as a motorsport watch, with no connection to space at the time. The Speedmaster is also said to have been the first watch to feature a tachymeter scale on the outer bezel rather than on the dial. In 1959, the Speedmaster underwent a minor update: the bezel was changed to a black aluminum insert, and the hands were changed from broad arrow hands to alpha hands, improving legibility. NASA later began searching for a robust chronograph capable of withstanding the extreme conditions of space, and the Speedmaster prevailed over several major competitors to become its official watch. It is famously known as the watch worn during mankind’s first Moon landing in 1969.
