COMMENT

通称スカラベのオメガです。スカラベとは、イタリア語でフンコロガシを意味する用語で、オメガがこの年式にのみ製作した特徴的なケースデザインを比喩した言葉として使われています。ベゼルはスムースなものと、梨地仕上げとの二段構造です。鏡面と梨地の切り替えが、素晴らしいコントラストとなっています。ダイアルは1910~40年代にかけて隆盛を極めたアール・デコ調です。ブルズアイで、内が縦にヘアライン加工を施したアイボリーカラー、外はブラックのミラーです。レールウェイのミニッツとアラビアのインデックスは全てゴールドの下地出しです。細かいレコード上のスモールセコンドも同様の仕様で、大変手が込んでいます。針はリーフハンド、ギルトのゴールドと色味を合わせています。

1939年製とは思えない、瑞々しいコンディションをしています。ケースは小傷すらほとんどないコンディションで、痩せもありません。複雑なヘアライン、鏡面、梨地の切り替えが決まっています。ダイアルはミントです。内側のアイボリー位置は、角度をつけて覗くと僅かなエイジングが確認できますが、肉眼では一切気になりません。ミラーは艶が残っていて、特有のエイジングはありません。約80年もの間、ほとんど使用されなかったことが解ります。弊社にて分解掃除済みです。

世界恐慌が終わり、第二次世界大戦までのほんの数年の間に制作されたこの美しく珍しい作品は、この時代のモダニズムの美学を捉えています。ジャンボサイズで、希少なステイブライト製。30mm前後が主流であった当時の時計と比べ勘案すると、際立った作品であったことでしょう。1930年代の特別な時計がミントなコンディションで残っている、奇跡のような個体です。

腕時計が普及し始めた1910年代から手巻き、自動巻と変遷を経て、クオーツ時計の開発によって機械式時計が衰退します。それ以前の1960年代に機械式腕時計はひとつのピークに達します。当時は日本でも三種の神器の一つだったオメガの時計。持つ人のステータスとなる高級品で、各メーカーが精度や防水性、耐久性など切磋琢磨し開発した時代。コストをかけて、より良い時計造りのためにしのぎを削っていました。

COMMENT

This Omega model, nicknamed “Scarab,” takes its name from the Italian word for dung beetle—a reference to the unique case design produced exclusively during this era. The bezel features a two-part structure, with a smooth outer ring and a finely grained inner ring, creating a striking contrast between polished and matte finishes. The dial showcases an Art Deco aesthetic, a style that flourished between the 1910s and 1940s. It features a bulls-eye layout with an ivory inner section adorned with vertical hairline brushing, and a glossy black mirror-finish outer ring. The minute track and Arabic numerals are finely embossed in gold, as is the recessed small seconds sub-dial, reflecting an exceptional level of craftsmanship. The watch is equipped with elegant leaf hands in gilt gold, harmonizing beautifully with the dial accents.

Despite being manufactured in 1939, the watch remains in remarkably fresh condition. The case shows virtually no wear, retaining its original profile without signs of polishing. The alternating finishes—brushed, mirror, and matte—are sharply defined. The dial is in mint condition; the inner ivory section may show the faintest aging when viewed at an angle, but nothing that detracts from the overall appearance. The mirror section retains its luster without notable signs of aging. It’s evident this piece was barely used over the past 80 years. Fully overhauled by our workshop and ready to wear.

Produced during the brief interwar period following the Great Depression and before the outbreak of World War II, this rare and elegant timepiece perfectly embodies the modernist aesthetic of the era. Its oversized case—crafted from rare Staybrite steel—was striking compared to the typical 30mm watches of its time. To find such a special piece from the 1930s in this pristine condition is nothing short of miraculous.

From the 1910s onward, as wristwatches began to gain popularity, Omega evolved through the eras of manual winding, automatic movements, and eventually saw the rise of quartz technology, which marked a turning point for mechanical watches. The 1960s, in particular, were a golden age for mechanical timepieces, during which Omega became one of the "Three Sacred Treasures" in Japan—a symbol of luxury and prestige. In this era, manufacturers competed fiercely to enhance precision, durability, and waterproof performance, often sparing no cost to produce the finest watches. Today, models from this period represent craftsmanship that can only be appreciated through vintage pieces.
