COMMENT

カレンダー窓が文字盤中央寄りに配置された、いわゆる“寄り目”仕様が印象的なIWCのデイトモデルです。3時位置にインデックスを残したまま日付窓を内側に設けた意匠は、当時ならではのデザインアプローチといえます。ダイヤルは中央がわずかに隆起した立体構造で、針は存在感のある太めのドーフィンハンド。ミニッツスケールにはパールドロップがあしらわれ、柔らかなアクセントを添えています。ケースは18金無垢製で、1950年代らしい華やかなファンシーラグが特徴。ラグの長いデザインは装着感にも優れており、腕元での存在感をしっかりと主張します。また、リューズには“シーラカンス”と呼ばれる旧型デザインが残されており、見逃せないディテールのひとつです。

ケースは形状を美しく保っており、複雑な造形を持つラグのエッジも明瞭です。ダイヤルは中央に僅かなダメージが見られますが、美しい生成色を維持しています。18金ケースとの調和も良く、全体として落ち着きと気品のある印象です。針やインデックスにはくすみがなく、丁寧に保管されてきたことがうかがえます。オリジナルの風防が付属している点は評価できます。弊社にて分解清掃済みです。

自動巻ムーブメントの薄型化に力を注いできたIWCですが、デイト付きモデルでは文字盤の中央部をわずかに盛り上げることで、ケースの側面を薄く見せる工夫がなされています。対してノンデイトモデルではフラットに近い文字盤が採用される傾向があり、デザインの選択にも明確な意図が見て取れます。ブランドが掲げてきた設計思想や技術への挑戦を知ることで、一つひとつの造形に意味があることが理解でき、着用するたびに時計への愛着も深まることでしょう。

BRAND

アメリカマサチューセッツ州ボストン出身の時計師、フロレンタイン・アリオスト・ジョーンズが1868年に創立したのが始まり。特徴的なデザインで今なお世界中で人気を誇る「パイロット・ウォッチ」コレクションなど、多くの人気シリーズを発売。磁気から時計を守る為の軟鉄製インナーケースや、IWC独自の"ぺラトン式"と呼ばれる両回転式自動巻機構はあまりに有名。

COMMENT

This IWC date model stands out with its so-called "cross-eyed" design, where the date window is positioned closer to the center of the dial rather than replacing the 3 o’clock index. This approach—preserving the hour marker while relocating the calendar aperture inward—reflects a distinctly mid-century design philosophy. The dial features a slightly domed center, adding dimensionality, and is paired with bold, faceted dauphine hands that offer strong visual presence. Pearl drop accents mark the minute track, softening the overall appearance with a touch of charm. The case is crafted in solid 18K gold and fitted with flamboyant, elongated fancy lugs—an unmistakable hallmark of 1950s design. Notably, the crown features the early “coelacanth” style, a rare and desirable vintage detail.

The case has retained its form beautifully, with the edges of the intricately shaped lugs remaining sharp and defined. The dial shows no significant marks or discoloration and maintains a warm, creamy tone that harmonizes elegantly with the gold case. The hands and indexes are free from tarnish, clearly indicating careful long-term preservation. The watch also retains its original acrylic crystal, a commendable detail. Fully disassembled and cleaned by our workshop.

While IWC is widely known for advancing the thinness of its automatic movements, this particular date model features a subtly domed dial center—a clever technique to visually slim down the case profile. By contrast, non-date models often employ flatter dials, revealing a deliberate design distinction based on functionality. Such subtle engineering decisions reflect the brand’s commitment to precision and aesthetics. IWC was founded in 1868 by American watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones, originally from Boston, Massachusetts. Over the years, the brand has introduced numerous iconic collections, including the internationally celebrated “Pilot’s Watch” series. IWC is also known for its engineering innovations, such as the soft iron inner case for anti-magnetic protection and the brand’s proprietary bidirectional automatic winding system, known as the Pellaton mechanism.
