COMMENT

ケースフォルムがユニークなスピードマスターマークIII。フライトマスターなどにも使用された通称「ボルケーノ（火山）」と呼ばれるものです。ケースメーカーはスーパーコンプレッサーなど防水性に優れたケースを開発していたEPSA（Ervin Piquerez SA）製、裏蓋の内側にはダイビングベルをデフォルメした刻印が見られます。ダイヤルはブラックマット。9時位置のインダイヤルは永久秒針の下に24時間表記の時刻を示すディスクを搭載しています。クロノグラフ秒針はスピードマスターと同様の形状です。羽の生えた針はクロノグラフの1時間積算計です。6時位置のインダイヤルは12時間積算計です。ブレスレットはRef.1162とエンドリンク172です。

ケースはオリジナルのプロポーションをよく残したグッドコンディションです。ダイヤルは当時の色味をよく残したミントコンディションです。傷や汚れなどの気になるようなダメージはありません。タキメーターがプリントされたインナーベゼルは濃いブラックカラーを残しています。針やレターのプリントに劣化は見られません。アプライドのインデックスはキラキラと上面を輝かせており、やれた印象を一切抱かない素晴らしいコンディションです。夜光塗料は素晴らしいベージュカラーを見せています。弊社にて分解掃除済みです。

厚み16.0mmの迫力溢れるケースデザインが際立っています。腕に装着した際の重厚な感触と、未来的なデザインはまさに1970年代のヴィンテージウォッチを楽しむ真髄と言えるでしょう。

今でこそ「Speedmasterイコール宇宙」という図式がすぐに浮かび上がりますが、当時は宇宙とは全く関係のない、純粋なモータースポーツ用の時計として誕生。また、スピードマスターは、ダイヤルではなく外周ベゼルにタキメーターを表示した世界で初めての時計と言われています。1959年、スピードマスターはマイナーチェンジをします。ベゼルがアルミニウムの黒色ベースとなり、針の形状がアロー針からアルファ針に変更されたことで、より視認性が高まっています。NASAは宇宙での過酷な環境にも耐えうる丈夫なクロノグラフを探しており、名だたる強豪に勝ったスピードマスターを公式時計として採用。その後1969年人類初の月面着陸の際、スピードマスターを着用していたことは有名な話。

COMMENT

The unique case design of the Speedmaster Mark III, often referred to as "Volcano," utilized by other models like the Flightmaster. The case, developed by EPSA (Ervin Piquerez SA), known for creating waterproof cases like the Super Compressor, features a distinctive engraving on the inside of the case back, resembling a deformed diving bell. The black matte dial includes a 24-hour disc beneath the perpetual seconds sub-dial at 9 o'clock. The chronograph seconds hand shares the same shape as the Speedmaster, and the winged hand serves as the 1-hour accumulator for the chronograph. The sub-dial at 6 o'clock functions as a 12-hour accumulator. The bracelet is a Ref.1162 with Endlink 172.

The case remains in good condition, preserving the original proportions. The dial is in mint condition, maintaining the coloration of that era with no noticeable damage such as scratches or stains. The inner bezel, printed with a tachymeter, retains a deep black color. There is no deterioration observed in the hands or letter prints. The applied indices shimmer on the surface, presenting an excellent condition without any signs of wear. The luminescent paint displays a beautiful beige color. The watch has been disassembled and cleaned by our company.

The imposing case design, measuring 16.0mm in thickness, stands out, providing a powerful feel when worn on the wrist. The combination of a substantial touch and futuristic design truly encapsulates the essence of enjoying vintage watches from the 1970s.

While today the equation "Speedmaster equals space" is readily apparent, during its inception, the Speedmaster had no connection to space but was purely designed as a chronograph for motorsports. Additionally, the Speedmaster is recognized as the first watch in the world to display a tachymeter on the outer bezel instead of the dial. In 1959, the Speedmaster underwent a minor change with the bezel transitioning to a black aluminum base and the hands changing from arrow hands to alpha hands, enhancing visibility. NASA sought a robust chronograph capable of withstanding the harsh conditions of space and officially adopted the Speedmaster after it triumphed over formidable competitors. The iconic story of the Speedmaster being worn during the first moon landing in 1969 is well-known.
