 オメガのレジェンド、スピードマスター4thの後期モデルです。NASAの正式採用となり、「PROFESSIONAL」の名が文字盤に登場しています。ユゲニン・フレアー（HF=Huguenin Freres）製のケースはノンポリッシュで、タキメーターベゼルも当時ものです。貴重なキャタピラブレスも付いており、状態は良好でスプリングも効いています。3rdからのアップグレードは、リュウズガードのためケースが左右非対称に、ラグがツイストしたデザインになりました。5thモデルとの違いとしては文字盤のΩがアップライトでムーブメントにはcal.321が用いられていることです。Cal.321は後のCal.861のカム式と違い、ピラーホイール式のため、コスト高で、チラネジテンプに巻き上げヒゲと高級仕様です。

ムーブメントは「月に到達したムーブメント」として一躍有名になったレマニアCal.321を搭載。シーマスタークロノグラフを改良してスピードマスターが誕生したなどの経緯もあり「ムーンウォッチ」イコール「スピードマスター」という深いつながりを持っている、レマニア社の傑作ムーブメントです。

今でこそ「Speedmasterイコール宇宙」という図式がすぐに浮かび上がりますが、当時は宇宙とは全く関係のない、純粋なモータースポーツ用の時計として誕生。また、スピードマスターは、ダイヤルではなく外周ベゼルにタキメーターを表示した世界で初めての時計と言われています。1959年、スピードマスターはマイナーチェンジをします。ベゼルがアルミニウムの黒色ベースとなり、針の形状がアロー針からアルファ針に変更されたことで、より視認性が高まっています。NASAは宇宙での過酷な環境にも耐えうる丈夫なクロノグラフを探しており、名だたる強豪に勝ったスピードマスターを公式時計として採用。その後1969年人類初の月面着陸の際、スピードマスターを着用していたことは有名なお話。

This is the later model of the legendary Speedmaster 4th, a true Omega icon. It earned its "PROFESSIONAL" designation on the dial upon NASA's official adoption. Crafted by Huguenin Freres (HF), the case retains its original non-polished finish, along with the vintage tachymeter bezel. The inclusion of the coveted Caterpillar bracelet adds to its allure, and its condition remains excellent, with the spring still resilient. An upgrade from the 3rd model, the asymmetrical case and twisted lugs were designed to accommodate the crown guards. Notably, the dial features an upright Ω, and it houses the esteemed cal.321 movement, known for its pillar-wheel design, which was considered more costly and luxurious compared to the cam-operated cal.861.

The movement is powered by the renowned Lemania Cal.321, famously known as the "movement that reached the moon." Its lineage traces back to the Seamaster chronograph, which underwent enhancements to give birth to the Speedmaster, cementing the deep connection between the "Moonwatch" and the Speedmaster.

While the association between "Speedmaster" and "space" is now inseparable, it's important to remember that it originated as a pure motorsport watch with no ties to space. Its distinction as the first watch to feature a tachymeter scale on the bezel instead of the dial is well-documented. Following its minor changes in 1959, including transitioning to a black aluminum bezel and changing the hand shape from arrow to alpha, its visibility was significantly enhanced. NASA's quest for a durable chronograph capable of withstanding the rigors of space led to the Speedmaster's official adoption as the space watch, triumphing over formidable competitors. Its association with the first manned moon landing in 1969 remains a legendary tale.
