COMMENT

1919年の誕生以来、永遠に作り続けられるCARTIERの名作タンク。その歴史の中で、1970年代に始まるディフュージョンライン〈マスト タンク〉以前に製造されたプレマスト期のモデルです。ケースは18金張り仕様で、ダイヤルに「must de」表記が入らないホワイトローマンのフェイスを採用。

ダイヤルはクラックのない優れたコンディションを維持。針はわずかなサビが見られますが、経年による風格を添えています。インデックスは艶感を保ち、プリントの欠けはありません。ケースは裏蓋のメッキ剥がれが見られるものの、上面は滑らかで、全体として良好な状態を保っています。リューズは当時のカボションが残り、欠けや損傷のない良好な状態です。弊社にて分解清掃済みです。

現在では、ジュエラーとして名高いカルティエですが、まだ懐中時計が主流だった1904年に本格的な腕時計を製作したのはカルティエが最初でした。「タンク」という名前は、“戦車”を意味し、第一次世界大戦中の終結に貢献したといわれる、ルノー製の戦車がデザインの基となっています。その中でもマストシリーズは文字盤のバリエーションが豊富にあります。

COMMENT

Since its debut in 1919, the Cartier Tank has remained one of the most enduring icons in watchmaking. This example dates from the “Pre-Must” period—produced before the launch of the Must de Cartier line in the 1970s. The case is gold-filled, and the dial features the classic white Roman design without the later “must de” inscription.

The dial is exceptionally well preserved, showing no cracks or discoloration. The hands display a slight trace of oxidation, adding a touch of vintage character, while the printed Roman numerals remain sharp and lustrous. The case shows minor wear, with some plating loss on the caseback, though the upper surfaces are smooth and intact. The cabochon crown from the period remains in excellent condition, free from chips or damage. Fully serviced by our watchmakers.

Pieces produced before the 1977 introduction of the Must de Cartier line are known among collectors as “Pre-Must” models. These watches belong to a fascinating transitional era, around 1973, when Cartier began its shift toward larger-scale wristwatch production. Now world-renowned as a jeweler, Cartier was also one of the pioneers of wristwatch design. In 1904, when pocket watches still dominated, Cartier created one of the first true wristwatches. The “Tank,” named after the Renault armored vehicles that contributed to the end of World War I, became a design icon with its clean, architectural lines. Within the collection, the later Must de Cartier series introduced a wide range of dial variations, continuing the brand’s spirit of elegance and innovation.
