クロノマットのファーストモデルは、角形プッシャーやパテントナンバーの印字、外周と内周で仕上げを切り替えたツートーンダイヤルなど、初期ならではの魅力が随所に表れた一本です。こちらは素材に18Kローズゴールドを採用した希少な仕様で、ダイヤル中央には航空計算尺の特許番号「217012」が記されており、当時の技術革新が凝縮された意匠となっています。ムーブメントにはクラシカルなクロノグラフの代表機・Venus 175を搭載。ピラーホイールとキャリングアーム、チラネジ付きの大型テンプにブレゲヒゲという高度な構成で、高精度を追求した設計が魅力です。

防水性能は考慮されていないため、現存する個体の多くはダイヤルにダメージが見られますが、本機はダイヤルの保存状態がきわめて良好な稀少個体です。外装はノンポリッシュで、目立つ痕跡が見られず、ケースフォルムは当時のプロポーションを良好に保っています。ケースバックにエングレーヴィングが確認できます。こちらはコレクターズアイテムとしてその価値が高く評価されており、コンディションを維持するため、分解掃除はあえて行わず、現状のままで販売となります。

ブライトリングといえば＜ナビタイマー＞のイメージが強いものの、＜クロノマット＞はそれに先駆けて誕生した航空クロノグラフであり、Ref.769はその初期型にあたります。世界初の“回転計算尺搭載腕時計”として戦後の技術史に名を残す本機は、時計の機能美と革新性が見事に融合した、ヴィンテージクロノグラフの金字塔といえる存在です。

【計算方法について】 例：18×25
外側スケールの「18」と内側スケールの「25」をベゼルを回して合わせ、5時位置の赤字“H”に表示される「450」が答えです。割り算はその逆に、割りたい元の数をHに合わせ、対応する内外のスケール位置から読み取ります。

航空時計とは言え、軍に官給された事はなく、主にアメリカの民間パイロットが使用していた。当時は庶民には手の届かない高級品であったことでしょう。“クロノグラフのスペシャリスト”として確固たる地位を築いた＜BREITLING＞は、今なお世界中で愛されている名門ブランドとして発展し続けています。

This early example of the Chronomat—reference 769—epitomizes the distinctive features of the model’s first generation: square pushers, the engraved patent number, and a two-tone dial with contrasting finishes between the central and outer scales. Exceptionally rare, this piece is crafted in solid 18K rose gold, and features the patent number "217012" at the dial’s center, referring to the circular slide rule—a symbol of mid-century horological innovation. Powering the watch is the Venus 175, a classic column-wheel chronograph movement equipped with a large screwed balance and Breguet overcoil, embodying a highly engineered construction aimed at precision. 

Due to the model’s non-waterproof construction, most surviving examples show considerable dial degradation. However, this particular piece retains an outstandingly well-preserved dial, making it a true rarity. The case remains unpolished, with no notable blemishes, and preserves the original proportions beautifully. The engraved caseback remains sharp. Owing to its exceptional collector value, the watch is offered in its current condition without a recent disassembly or cleaning.

While Breitling is best known for the Navitimer, the Chronomat predates it and was the brand’s first aviation chronograph. As the world’s first wristwatch equipped with a rotating slide rule, the ref. 769 occupies a significant place in postwar technical history. It stands as a milestone in the evolution of chronograph design—an extraordinary union of mechanical ingenuity and aesthetic refinement.

[Calculation Method] Example: 18 x 25
Rotate the bezel to align the "18" on the outer scale with the "25" on the inner scale. The answer, "450," will be displayed in the red "H" at the 5 o'clock position. Division is the reverse: align the number you want to divide with H and read it from the corresponding position on the inner or outer scale.

BRAND

Although it's an aviation watch, it was never issued to the military and was mainly used by civilian pilots in the United States. It must have been a luxury item out of reach for ordinary people back then. Breitling, firmly established as the "chronograph specialist," continues to evolve as a prestigious brand loved by people worldwide.
