COMMENT

クロノマットのファーストモデルは、角形プッシャーやパテントナンバーの表記、外周と内周で仕上げを切り替えたツートーンダイヤルなど、初期ならではの魅力が随所に宿る一本です。ダイヤル中央には航空計算尺の特許番号「217012」が記され、当時の技術革新を象徴する意匠となっています。ムーブメントにはVenus 175を搭載。ピラーホイールとキャリングアームによる正統的な構成、大型テンプにチラネジ、ブレゲヒゲを備えた高度な設計で、当時のブライトリングが追求した精度の哲学を体現しています。

ダイヤルは中央寄りに湿気由来のエイジングが見られますが、ヴィンテージ特有の雰囲気を引き立てる穏やかな風合いです。58分位置と、25分〜32分間のSWISS MADE 下部にかけて傷の痕跡が確認できます。針は夜光が美しいベージュトーンへと変化しており、ブルースチールは鮮やかな輝きを維持しています。インデックスの夜光塗料はわずかに黒みを帯びていますが欠損はなく、均整の取れた状態です。ケースはエッジが鋭く、力強さが残るスタンニングなコンディションです。弊社にて分解掃除済みです。

ブライトリングといえばナビタイマーの印象が強いものの、クロノマットはその前段階として誕生した航空クロノグラフであり、Ref.769はまさにその初期型にあたります。世界初の“回転計算尺搭載腕時計”として技術史に名を残す本機は、機能美と革新性が高度に融合した存在であり、ヴィンテージクロノグラフの金字塔ともいえる一本です。

【計算方法について】 例：18×25
外側スケールの「18」と内側スケールの「25」をベゼルを回して合わせ、5時位置の赤字“H”に表示される「450」が答えです。割り算はその逆に、割りたい元の数をHに合わせ、対応する内外のスケール位置から読み取ります。

The first-generation Chronomat captures the distinctive appeal unique to the earliest iterations of the model, featuring square pushers, a patent-number inscription, and a two-tone dial achieved by contrasting the finishing of the inner and outer scales. At the center lies the aviation slide-rule patent number “217012,” a hallmark of the era’s technological innovation. Powering the watch is the Venus 175, a classically constructed movement with a column wheel and carrying arm, a large balance with timing screws, and a Breguet overcoil—an architecture that reflects Breitling’s uncompromising pursuit of precision at the time.

The dial shows moisture-related aging toward the center, lending a gentle vintage character. Scratch traces are visible at the 58-minute mark and between 25 and 32 minutes beneath “SWISS MADE.” The luminous material on the hands has aged into an attractive beige tone, while the blued steel retains a vivid brilliance. The luminous plots on the indexes show slight darkening but no losses, maintaining excellent balance overall. The case is sharply defined with striking edges, preserving the strong presence characteristic of early Chronomats. Fully serviced by our watchmaker.

Although Breitling is often associated with the Navitimer, the Chronomat represents its direct predecessor in the lineage of aviation chronographs, and Ref.769 is the earliest version of that evolution. As the world’s first wristwatch equipped with a rotating slide rule, it occupies an important place in horological history—a seamless fusion of functional beauty and technical innovation. It stands among the defining pillars of vintage chronographs.

【How the slide-rule calculation works】
Example: 18 × 25
Rotate the bezel to align “18” on the outer scale with “25” on the inner scale; the red “H” at the 5 o’clock position will indicate “450,” the product.
For division, reverse the process: align the number to be divided with “H,” and read the corresponding value on the opposite scale.

Although often counted among aviation watches, Breitling’s early chronographs were not issued to military forces; they were primarily used by civilian pilots in the United States.
