COMMENT

1939年製、ミッドサイズカラトラバケースのオールドインターです。14Kイエローゴールド製。最初期の防水スクリューバック構造で、ツメが確認できます。ダイヤルはゴールドのツートン、仕上げによって光の反射加減を変えています。インデックス、ミニッツ、スモールセコンドがブラックプリントです。一段下がり、精緻な溝は造り込みが良く、シンプルなデザインの中にもIWCのモノづくりへの心意気を感じます。バネ棒式ではなく、固定ラグです。アーカイブが付属します。

ケースは素晴らしいコンディション。ラグやベゼルが立っており、迫力があります。小傷は少なく、当時のプロポーションが感じ取れる貴重な個体です。ダイヤルは素晴らしいコンディションです。この年式ともなると、焼けにより色味に変化が出ている個体が多いですが、ツートンの色味は当時のままを保っています。プリントのレターは劣化が見られません。シルバーの針は発色良く残っています。古い機械ですが、弊社にて分解掃除済みで好調に動いているのを確認しております。

カラトラバケースという呼称は現在、ケースとラグが一体化した意匠を指すことが一般的ですが、パテック フィリップのカラトラバが登場する以前、1920年代からIWCが同様の造形を手掛けていたとされる説も伝わっています。本作のダイヤルには“ANTI-MAGNETIC”の表記が入り、当時の技術志向を物語っています。さらにスクリューバックの仕様は、金無垢ケースにおいて稀有なものです。スモールセコンドのミニッツレールや端正なフォントは1930年代特有のディテールで、いずれも素晴らしい状態で鑑賞いただけます。ブルースチールのリーフハンドがゴールドのツートンに柔らかなアクセントを添え、時代の空気をそのまま宿した一本に仕上がっています。

アメリカマサチューセッツ州ボストン出身の時計師、フロレンタイン・アリオスト・ジョーンズが1868年に創立したのが始まり。特徴的なデザインで今なお世界中で人気を誇る「パイロット・ウォッチ」コレクションなど、多くの人気シリーズを発売。磁気から時計を守る為の軟鉄製インナーケースや、IWC独自の"ぺラトン式"と呼ばれる両回転式自動巻機構はあまりに有名。

COMMENT

This 1939 mid-size Calatrava-style IWC is crafted in 14K yellow gold and features one of the earliest waterproof screw-back case constructions, complete with visible case “claws.” The dial presents a two-tone gold finish that shifts subtly with the light, while the indexes, minute track, and small-seconds markings are executed in crisp black print. The recessed small-seconds register is finely grooved, reflecting the high level of craftsmanship IWC applied even to its most restrained designs. The watch is fitted with fixed lugs rather than spring bars, and an archive extract accompanies the piece.

The case is in outstanding condition, with sharp lugs and a well-defined bezel that retain an impressive presence. Surface marks are minimal, making this a valuable example that still conveys its original proportions. The dial, too, is superb; watches of this era often show heavy patination or discolouration, yet the two-tone finish here remains remarkably intact. The printed text shows no deterioration, and the silver hands have preserved their original brilliance. Despite its age, the movement runs reliably and has been fully serviced by our watchmaker.

Although “Calatrava case” today generally refers to an integrated case-and-lug design associated with Patek Philippe, it is said that IWC had already explored similar case architecture as early as the 1920s—well before Patek’s adoption of the style. The dial bears the designation “ANTI-MAGNETIC,” a nod to the technical ambitions of the period. The small-seconds minute track and the elegant typography exhibit quintessential 1930s character, all preserved in excellent condition. The blued-steel leaf hands bring a soft contrast to the gold two-tone dial, completing a watch that genuinely captures the atmosphere of its era.
