キャリバーはレマニア社製をベースとしたCal.861の後継機である1861を搭載しています。NASAの規定にはじめて合格したことでも有名な初代Cal.321は非常に完成度の高い機械としてその名を残しています。Cal.1861も含め、OMEGAが長年採用してきた３レジスター手巻き式クロノグラフが搭載されている点は、忘れてはいけないポイントです。

今でこそ「Speedmasterイコール宇宙」という図式がすぐに浮かび上がりますが、当時は宇宙とは全く関係のない、純粋なモータースポーツ用の時計として誕生。また、スピードマスターは、ダイヤルではなく外周ベゼルにタキメーターを表示した世界で初めての時計と言われています。1959年、スピードマスターはマイナーチェンジをします。ベゼルがアルミニウムの黒色ベースとなり、針の形状がアロー針からアルファ針に変更されたことで、より視認性が高まっています。NASAは宇宙での過酷な環境にも耐えうる丈夫なクロノグラフを探しており、名だたる強豪に勝ったスピードマスターを公式時計として採用。その後1969年人類初の月面着陸の際、スピードマスターを着用していたことは有名なお話。

NASA's quest for a durable chronograph capable of withstanding the rigors of space led to the Speedmaster's official adoption as the space watch, triumphing over formidable competitors. Its association with the first manned moon landing in 1969 remains a legendary tale.
