スピードマスターで初めてシースルーバックを採用されたモデルでもあります。裏蓋にはサファイアガラスがはめ込まれています。シースルーバックになる事で機械の装飾が意識され、ムーブメントにゴールドメッキを使い、コートドジュネーブ仕上げが施されています。

今でこそ「Speedmasterイコール宇宙」という図式がすぐに浮かび上がりますが、当時は宇宙とは全く関係のない、純粋なモータースポーツ用の時計として誕生。また、スピードマスターは、ダイヤルではなく外周ベゼルにタキメーターを表示した世界で初めての時計と言われています。1959年、スピードマスターはマイナーチェンジをします。ベゼルがアルミニウムの黒色ベースとなり、針の形状がアロー針からアルファ針に変更されたことで、より視認性が高まっています。NASAは宇宙での過酷な環境にも耐えうる丈夫なクロノグラフを探しており、名だたる強豪に勝ったスピードマスターを公式時計として採用。その後1969年人類初の月面着陸の際、スピードマスターを着用していたことは有名なお話。

It's worth noting that this model was the first in the Speedmaster line to feature a transparent case back, with a sapphire crystal fitted onto the case back. The use of a transparent case back highlights the movement's decoration, featuring gold plating and Côtes de Genève finishing.

While today the association between "Speedmaster" and "space" is immediately apparent, it's important to remember that it originated as a pure motorsport watch with no ties to space. Additionally, the Speedmaster is renowned for being the first watch to display a tachymeter scale on its outer bezel instead of the dial, marking a significant milestone in watchmaking history. Following its minor changes in 1959, such as transitioning to a black aluminum bezel and changing the hand shape from arrow to alpha, its visibility was significantly enhanced. NASA's quest for a durable chronograph capable of withstanding the rigors of space led to the Speedmaster's official adoption as the space watch, triumphing over formidable competitors. Its association with the first manned moon landing in 1969 remains a legendary tale.
