COMMENT

1969年から製造が開始されたゼニスのデファイは、八角形のステンレスケースを備えたユニークで幾何学的なデザインが特徴です。300mの防水性能を誇り、当時としては珍しい傷がつきにくい強靭なミネラルクリスタルを採用しています。ベゼルがガラスをスクリューダウンする防水ケース構造で、オリジナルの竜頭もスクリューロックタイプです。ダイヤルバリエーションでリファレンスが分けられており、復刻もされたA3642がグラデーションダイヤルなのに対し、このA3645は無骨な半艶のグレーダイヤルを採用しています。針はゼニス独自の剣のような形状で、秒針の夜光のみオレンジ色で、チャーミングなアクセントを加えています。

搭載ムーブメントはCal.2562PCで、ゼニス独自のムーブメントです。デイトジャストのように日付が瞬転する機構を備え、ムーブメント外周に弾性のある衝撃吸収バンドを使用することで、衝撃保護を実現しています。

ケースは小傷を帯びており、迫力が増しています。多角的なエッジは当時のままのシャープさを保ち、大変評価できます。竜頭のねじ込みも良好です。ダイヤルはパーフェクトなコンディションで、気になるようなダメージは見られず、当時のままの色味を保っています。針やインデックスは上面の鏡面仕上げにくすみが見られず、非常に良い状態です。トリチウムの夜光は美しいベージュカラーで、形が崩れていません。弊社にて分解掃除済みです。このベゼルは汎用工具では開閉が容易ではありませんが、弊社では専用工具を用意しております。

デファイは、当時のスイス時計界で一般的だった耐久性を大きく上回る水準を達成することを目標としていました。それは、防水性能に特化したケース構造、先進的なミネラルガラス、そして耐衝撃のムーブメントに反映されています。A3645は最も有名なA3642と同時期に販売された初期のモデルで、その後シリーズは広がりを見せ、ダイバーズモデルやさまざまなケースバリエーションで発展を遂げました。

機械式時計の名機エル・プリメロで知られるスイスのブランド。1865年にスイスのル・ロックルで創業し、「天頂」をブランド名称の由来とするゼニスは、ムーブメントの開発および製造を自社で一貫して行っているマニュファクチュールブランドです。その技術力の高さは、博覧会などで獲得した2000を超える賞の数々が物語っています。

COMMENT

The Zenith Defy, introduced in 1969, is renowned for its distinctive octagonal stainless steel case and geometric design. With an impressive 300m water resistance, this watch was ahead of its time, featuring a durable mineral crystal that was highly resistant to scratches—a rarity in those days. The case's waterproof structure includes a screw-down bezel that secures the crystal, and the original crown is also screw-locking, ensuring the watch’s robust performance. Among its various dial configurations, while the A3642 model—recently reissued—features a gradient dial, this A3645 variant sports a rugged, semi-gloss gray dial. Zenith’s unique sword-shaped hands are present, with the seconds hand accented by a charming orange lume, adding a touch of playfulness to the otherwise serious design.

The watch is powered by Zenith’s own Caliber 2562PC, which includes a quickset date mechanism that instantly changes the date at midnight, much like the Datejust. The movement is also shock-resistant, thanks to an elastic shock absorber surrounding the movement’s perimeter.

The case shows some minor wear, which enhances its character, while the multifaceted edges remain sharp, preserving the watch’s original allure. The crown threads smoothly and securely. The dial is in perfect condition, maintaining its original color, with no visible damage. The hands and indexes have retained their mirror-polished finish without tarnishing, remaining in excellent condition. The tritium lume has aged beautifully into a beige hue, retaining its shape. The watch has been fully serviced by our shop. Although the bezel is not easy to open with standard tools, we have the necessary specialized equipment for proper maintenance.

The Defy was a trailblazer in the Swiss watch industry, aiming to exceed the durability standards of its time. This goal is evident in its waterproof case design, advanced mineral glass, and shock-resistant movement. The A3645 was released alongside the more famous A3642 as part of the original series and marked the beginning of a line that would expand into various diver models and case variations.

Zenith, known for its legendary El Primero movement, is a Swiss brand founded in 1865 in Le Locle. The name "Zenith" is derived from the highest point reached by a celestial body, symbolizing the brand's pursuit of excellence. As a true manufacture, Zenith has consistently developed and produced its movements in-house. The brand’s technical prowess is underscored by the more than 2,000 awards it has won at exhibitions and competitions, affirming its place as one of the top names in horology.
