TUDOR PRINCE OYSTERPRINCE Debossed hour markers Ref.7808
COMMENT
BRAND

COMMENT
The matte white dial features a vintage-inspired design, combining debossed Arabic numerals at 3, 6, 9, and 2 o'clock with wedge-shaped indices. Finished in a warm rose gold tone, these elements stand out beautifully against the muted background. The dial's chapter ring is a hallmark of pre-1950s vintage watches, capturing the spirit of its era. Unlike many examples from this generation that are marked “OYSTER PRINCE 34,” this particular piece omits the "34," making it an intriguing variant. The dauphine hands are generously filled with luminous material, ensuring excellent legibility while enhancing the design’s character. A blued steel seconds hand, with its extended tail, adds a subtle yet unmistakable presence.
The case offers well-defined contours without excessive assertiveness, achieving a harmonious overall balance. Originally white, the dial has gracefully aged into a soft, creamy hue, adding a serene vintage charm. The domed plastic crystal gently softens the contrast between the dial and hands, creating a pleasing diffusion of light. The watch has been fully serviced by us.
Reference 7808 holds a special place in TUDOR’s history as the brand’s first self-winding Oyster model. It is particularly notable among TUDOR’s rugged tool watches from the 1950s for its historical significance. This model gained fame through its use by members of the British North Greenland Expedition (BNGE), who tested its durability and reliability under the extreme conditions of the Arctic, with temperatures reaching as low as -66°C. The expedition was a groundbreaking scientific mission, focusing on foundational studies in geology, meteorology, climatology, and physiology. This success would later inspire the creation of the TUDOR Ranger. While some confusion persists regarding LONGINES watches nicknamed the "Greenlander," it is, in fact, this very model that deserves the title. This piece remains an exceptional collector’s item, embodying TUDOR’s original pursuit of legibility, ruggedness, and timeless vintage detailing.
BRAND
Founded in 1926 as a diffusion brand to expand Rolex’s presence in the UK market, the brand name is derived from the renowned "Tudor family," reflecting a desire to create a sense of accessibility for the public. A key factor in the popularity of vintage Tudors is the use of Rolex components, such as the case and crown. Additionally, the use of the Tudor family’s rose emblem in the logo led to the creation of popular Tudor models with the same Rolex cases but dials featuring the rose logo, known as "Big Rose" and "Small Rose." Later, Tudor changed its logo to a shield motif, distancing itself from Rolex and pursuing its own path.
