SEIKO MATIC CHRONOMETER REF.6245-9000

COMMENT

搭載は自動巻 Cal.6245A。

COMMENT

This Seiko Matic Chronometer Ref.6245-9000, produced in May 1966, represents the essence of Seiko’s “Glamour of Design” era. It features the chronometer-certified caliber 6245A and the distinctive lion medallion caseback, symbolizing precision and prestige. The automatic movement is housed within a sharply defined round case (approximately 36.5mm) with the crown recessed at the 4 o’clock position—an elegant design choice that contributes to its streamlined silhouette. This example is presented in the refined cap gold variant, combining practical functionality with a distinctly luxurious tone. The silver dial, accented by bar indexes and a framed date display, embodies a balance of sophistication and utility.

The case shows light signs of use while retaining crisp edges along the lugs and bezel. The lion medallion on the caseback remains well-defined, and the engravings are clearly legible. The dial preserves sharp printing, and the hands and indexes maintain their polished bevels without loss of clarity or contrast. Overall, the watch remains in excellent condition, faithfully reflecting its original 1960s proportions. Fully serviced by our watchmakers.

This model stands as the direct predecessor—the “eve,” so to speak—of the Grand Seiko 62GS lineage. The Seikomatic Chronometer 6245/6246-9000 marked the starting point of that evolution, and its short production run makes surviving examples particularly scarce. The combination of the lion medallion caseback, chronometer certification, and the recessed 4 o’clock crown encapsulates Seiko’s mid-1960s pursuit of refinement and functional beauty. A historically important and highly collectible piece that captures the spirit of May 1966 with both mechanical precision and quiet dignity.

“Seiko Matic” refers to a family of automatic wristwatches produced by Seiko from the late 1950s through the 1960s. The name signified the company’s reliable and efficient automatic winding technology, centered around the Cal.6200 series. Known for their durability, winding efficiency, and precision, these models represented the pinnacle of Japanese horological engineering of the time. Among them, the “Seiko Matic Chronometer” stood at the top of the range, equipped with chronometer-grade movements that laid the foundation for the later Grand Seiko 62GS—one of Seiko’s defining achievements.
