CARTIER LM Santos Ref.2961 MINT CONDITION w.BOX and Paper

COMMENT

1978年に始まるサントスの系譜において、角形のサントス、オクタゴン、ラウンドという3形状の展開から、代表的なコンビ仕様として位置づけられるのがSantos Ref.2961です。ダイヤルは当時のオリジナルで、柔らかなポーセリンカラー。カルティエらしいローマ数字とミニッツトラックに、ブルースチールのバトン針を合わせた王道の構成です。自動巻きムーブメントはCal.2671を搭載。そして本品の最大の見どころはブレスレットです。一般的に見かけるサントスはコマごとにマイナスネジが2本ずつ配されるタイプですが、こちらは自動巻きモデルに限って装備される「ゴドロンブレスレット」。面の造形とゴールドの意匠が連続し、時計全体の印象を一段上げる、希少な仕様です。

コンディションはスーパーミント。弊社でもRef.2961は数多く扱ってきましたが、ここまで状態が揃った個体は稀です。ブレスレットは傷が極めて少なく、金の装飾が各コマをつなぐように走ることで、立体感と奥行きがいっそう際立っています。ベゼルの鏡面も印象がクリアで、ポリッシュで輪郭が崩れた雰囲気は見られません。オリジナルダイヤルはクラックやシミがなく、ポーセリンカラーの美しさをそのまま保っています。針にもくすみがなく、端正な気品が感じられます。弊社にて分解掃除済みです。過去に分解掃除をされた形跡は見受けられず、今回が初めて行われたものと見られます。

ゴドロンブレスのサントスは、近年とくに注目度が高まっている仕様ですが、コンディションまで含めて探すと一気に難しくなります。ダイヤ、ベゼル、ブレスの傷の少なさまで揃うことで、このリファレンス本来の“華やかさと端正さ”が過不足なく立ち上がります。時計としての魅力はもちろん、当時のファーストオーナーの気分に限りなく近い状態で味わえる一本です。

BRAND

ビス留めのケースは飛行機のパーツを繋ぐネジがモチーフで、機体をイメージしてダイヤルなどの角がまるみを帯びたデザイン。現在ではジュエラーとして名高いカルティエですが、まだ懐中時計が主流だった1904年に本格的な腕時計を製作したのはカルティエが最初。アルベルト・サントス・デュモンという飛行家からの「飛行中に手を離さずに見ることができる時計がほしい。」という依頼が誕生のきっかけで、「サントス」の名を冠した腕時計が1911年に一般発売されました。

COMMENT

Within the Santos lineage that began in 1978—developed in three case shapes: square Santos, Octagon, and Round—the Santos Ref. 2961 stands out as a representative two-tone model. The dial is original to the period, rendered in a soft porcelain tone, and features Cartier’s signature Roman numerals and minute track, paired with blued steel baton hands in a classic, unmistakably Cartier configuration. The watch is powered by the automatic Cal. 2671.
The true highlight of this piece, however, is the bracelet. While most Santos models are fitted with bracelets secured by two visible screws per link, this example features the rare “Godron bracelet,” produced exclusively for automatic models. Its sculpted surfaces and continuous gold accents elevate the overall presence of the watch, making it a particularly scarce and desirable specification.

The condition can only be described as super mint. We have handled many examples of Ref. 2961, but encountering one preserved at this level is exceptional. The bracelet shows virtually no wear, and the gold detailing that runs through each link enhances the depth and dimensionality of the design. The bezel’s mirror finish remains crisp, with no loss of definition from excessive polishing. The original dial is free from cracks or stains, retaining the full beauty of its porcelain coloration. The hands show no dulling, contributing to a refined and dignified impression. Fully serviced by our watchmaker; there are no signs of previous servicing, suggesting this was likely the first overhaul.

Santos models fitted with the Godron bracelet have drawn increasing attention in recent years, yet finding one that also meets this standard of condition is markedly difficult. With the dial, bezel, and bracelet all exhibiting minimal wear, the inherent balance of elegance and clarity that defines this reference is expressed without compromise. Beyond its appeal as a timepiece, this watch offers a rare opportunity to experience the model in a state remarkably close to that enjoyed by its original owner.

BRAND

The screw-secured case was inspired by the fasteners used in aircraft construction, with softly rounded edges evoking the form of an airframe. Although Cartier is now renowned as a jeweler, it was in fact the first to produce a true wristwatch as early as 1904, at a time when pocket watches were still the norm. The watch was created at the request of aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, who sought a timepiece he could read without removing his hands from the controls while flying. This request led to the birth of the Santos, which was released to the public in 1911 under that very name.
