ROLEX Hooded BUBBLE BACK Ref.6065 w.CHROMWELL Bracelet

COMMENT

COMMENT

The rounded case back characteristic of the Bubbleback, combined with the gold and stainless-steel construction, creates an elegant sense of 1950s refinement. Ref. 6065 features hooded lugs with a striped finish, adding density and depth to its overall design. The dial is rendered in an ivory tone, arranged with wedge indexes and Arabic numerals at 12 and 6 in a composed and balanced layout typical of the period. Within its restrained expression, the applied indexes rise subtly from the surface, lending quiet dimensional presence. The watch is fitted with a Super Oyster crown rather than a screw-down type. The bracelet is a U.S.-made CHROMWELL two-tone elastic riveted bracelet, bearing a ROLEX engraving on the clasp.

The case retains clear contours, with the sculptural form of the hooded lugs remaining well defined. Light hairline marks are visible on the exterior, though nothing detracts from the overall impression. The dial shows spotted patina consistent with age. The raised hands and indexes sharpen the facial expression. The bracelet’s expansion mechanism functions properly. Fully serviced by our watchmaker.

The “Bubbleback” nickname derives from the protruding case back, designed to accommodate an automatic rotor within a case originally conceived for manual-wind construction. It stands as a symbol of the era in which Rolex established the pairing of water resistance and automatic winding as a standard. The presence of an original Rolex-signed CHROMWELL two-tone extension bracelet further enhances the completeness of this example.

The Bubbleback is said to have been produced from around 1933 to 1955 and is regarded as one of Rolex’s flagship achievements and a true masterpiece. Its distinctive, bubble-like case back—an unconventional form unlikely to be seen today—continues to captivate collectors. In recent years, examples have become increasingly scarce, making them ever more elusive. As one of the earliest fully realized automatic wristwatches, it occupies a defining position within the world of vintage Rolex. It is often said that those who pursue vintage watches deeply will eventually arrive at the Bubbleback. With its gently domed case back and wide variety of dial and hand configurations, it carries the unmistakable presence of a bygone era and remains an enduring classic cherished by enthusiasts worldwide.
