COMMENT

1960年代後半に製造されたIWC Ref.803Aです。細身のベゼルと真円のケース、直線的に伸びるファセットラグを組み合わせた、オールドインターらしい端正な自動巻モデルです。シルバーのサンバーストダイヤルには、細身のアプライドバーインデックスとブラックラインを入れた針を配置。12時、6時、9時位置には幅のあるダブルインデックスを用い、3時位置のデイト表示には立体的なファセットを施した窓枠を備えています。

ケースには使用に伴う細かな傷が見られますが、ラグ先端のカッティングとケースサイドの輪郭は明瞭に残り、全体のプロポーションは良好です。ダイヤルにはわずかな経年変化が見られるものの、サンバースト仕上げと各種プリントは美しく保たれています。針とインデックスにも目立つ傷や腐食はなく、光を端正に反射します。ケース内部には「STAYBRITE STEEL」の表記をはじめ、Ref.803Aとケース番号が鮮明に残されています。弊社にて分解清掃済みです。

ムーブメントは、25石の自動巻Cal.8541を搭載。IWCの技術責任者アルベルト・ペラトンが考案した、双方向巻き上げのペラトン式自動巻機構を採用しています。巻き上げの際には、ビーズを転がすような音色を鳴らします。その音量は他社製品と比べて明らかに大きいことが特徴です。ローターの動きをカムと一対の爪を介して主ゼンマイへ伝える構造で、巻き上げ効率と耐久性に優れ、その基本設計は後年のIWC製ムーブメントにも受け継がれました。Cal.8541は毎時19,800振動、約40時間のパワーリザーブを備え、インヂュニアをはじめとする同時代の上位モデルにも採用されたCal.85系の完成形に位置づけられます。 控えめなドレススタイルの外装に、IWCを代表する自動巻機構を収めた実直な一本です。

Produced in the late 1960s, this IWC Ref.803A is a classically proportioned automatic model combining a slim bezel, round case, and straight, faceted lugs. The silver sunburst dial is fitted with slender applied baton indexes and hands accented by black inserts. Wider double indexes mark 12, 6, and 9 o’clock, while the date display at 3 o’clock is framed by a raised, faceted surround.

The case shows fine scratches from use, though the defined cutting at the tips of the lugs and the outlines of the case sides remain clear, preserving good overall proportions. The dial displays slight aging, while its sunburst finish and printed details remain well preserved. The hands and indexes show no notable scratches or corrosion and continue to reflect the light cleanly. Inside the case, the “STAYBRITE STEEL” designation, Ref.803A, and case number remain clearly legible. Fully serviced by our watchmaker.

Inside is the 25-jewel automatic Cal.8541, equipped with the bidirectional Pellaton winding system developed by IWC technical director Albert Pellaton. During winding, the mechanism produces a distinctive sound reminiscent of rolling beads, noticeably louder than that of many comparable movements. The system transfers the motion of the rotor to the mainspring through a cam and paired pawls, providing efficient winding and durable construction. Its fundamental design would continue to influence later IWC movements. Cal.8541 operates at 19,800 vibrations per hour and provides a power reserve of approximately 40 hours. As one of the most developed members of the Cal.85 family, it was also used in higher-grade contemporary models, including the Ingenieur. Its understated dress-watch exterior houses one of IWC’s most characteristic automatic winding mechanisms.
