1967年に登場した、グランドセイコー初の自動巻モデル「62GS」、Ref.6245-9001です。ベゼルを設けず、ケースへ直接風防を取り付ける構造によって、ダイヤルを大きく見せながら外装の厚みを抑えています。ケースは広い鏡面と鋭い稜線を組み合わせた多面的な造形で、操作頻度の少ない自動巻であることから、リューズを4時位置へ控えめに配置。シルバーダイヤルには中心から放射状に広がるサンレイ仕上げを施し、多面カットのバーインデックスと鋭いドーフィンハンド、立体的な窓枠を備えたデイト表示を組み合わせています。アプライドの「SEIKO」と「GS」ロゴも、当時の最高級機らしい丁寧な仕上がりです。

本個体は、62GSの複雑なケース造形を十分に堪能できる、極めて良好なコンディションを維持しています。ケースにはわずかな使用傷が見られる程度で、ラグ上面の広い鏡面、側面へ切り替わる鋭い稜線、ラグ先端の細かなファセットが明瞭です。研磨によるケースの痩せをほとんど感じさせず、左右のラグも厚みと均整の取れた形状を保っています。ダイヤルは変色や傷が見られないミントコンディションで、サンレイの繊細な質感と各種プリントが鮮明。針とインデックスにもくすみやメッキの剥がれはなく、鏡面の輝きが瑞々しく残っています。裏蓋の金色のGSメダリオンも摩耗が少なく、外周のRef.6245-9001表記とシリアルは明瞭です。弊社にて分解清掃済みです。

ムーブメントは、35石の自動巻Cal.6245Aを搭載。毎時19,800振動で作動し、デイト表示と秒針停止機構を備えた、グランドセイコー初期の高精度自動巻キャリバーです。同時期のCal.6246Aが曜日と日付を備えるのに対し、本機は日付表示のみに絞られ、左右対称に近い簡潔なダイヤル構成を実現しています。製造期間が短く、さらに特徴的な多面ケースは研磨によって本来の輪郭を失いやすいため、ダイヤル、ケース、メダリオンのいずれもこれほど良好な状態を保つ個体は貴重です。62GSの造形と、1960年代のグランドセイコーが追求した精度を、製造当時に近い姿で味わえる一本です。

COMMENT

Introduced in 1967, the 62GS Ref.6245-9001 was Grand Seiko’s first automatic model. Its bezel-free construction secures the crystal directly to the case, allowing the dial to appear larger while keeping the overall profile relatively slim. The multifaceted case combines broad polished surfaces with sharply defined lines, while the crown is discreetly positioned at 4 o’clock to reflect the reduced need for manual operation provided by the automatic movement. The silver dial has a radial sunburst finish, complemented by multifaceted baton indexes, sharply defined dauphine hands, and a date display with a raised surround. The applied “SEIKO” and “GS” emblems are finished to the standard expected of Seiko’s highest-grade model of the period.

This example remains in exceptional condition, allowing the complex case construction of the 62GS to be fully appreciated. The case shows only very minor scratches from use, while the broad polished lug surfaces, sharply defined transitions to the case sides, and fine facets at the lug tips remain clear. There is little indication of material loss from polishing, and both sets of lugs retain their substantial, well-balanced form. The dial remains in mint condition, with no noticeable discoloration or damage; its fine sunburst texture and printed details are crisp. The hands and indexes show no tarnishing or loss of plating and retain their bright polished finish. The gold-tone GS medallion on the case back shows minimal wear, while the surrounding Ref.6245-9001 designation and serial number remain clearly legible. Fully serviced by our watchmaker.

Inside is the 35-jewel automatic Cal.6245A. Operating at 19,800 vibrations per hour, it features a date display and hacking seconds and was among Grand Seiko’s earliest high-precision automatic movements. While the contemporary Cal.6246A included both day and date displays, the Cal.6245A is limited to the date, allowing for a cleaner and nearly symmetrical dial layout. Production was brief, and the model’s distinctive multifaceted case is particularly susceptible to losing its original definition through polishing. Examples retaining the dial, case, and medallion in this condition are therefore seldom encountered. This watch presents the distinctive form of the 62GS and Grand Seiko’s pursuit of precision during the 1960s in a state notably close to its original appearance.
