Ref.5500 Explorerは、34mmのオイスターケースで展開されたロレックスの中でも、Explorer表記のダイヤルを備えた希少なバリエーションです。Ref.1016に見られる36mmケースとは異なり、よりコンパクトなケースサイズの中に、三角マーカー、アラビアインデックス、メルセデスハンド、ロリポップセコンドといったエクスプローラーらしい要素が凝縮されています。ダイヤルはブラックギルトのミラーダイヤルです。6時位置には「T<25 SWISS T<25」の表記が入り、中央のSWISSのみがギルト、左右のT<25は後からプリントされた過渡期らしい仕様です。ブレスレットはエキスパンション仕様のオイスターブレスレット Ref.6635、エンドリンク57、クラスプデイト64/4が装備されています。

ケースは使用に伴う小傷が見られますが、ラグはしっかりとした厚みを保ち、ベゼルからケースサイドにかけて良好なプロポーションを維持しています。ダイヤルはミラーの艶感が素晴らしく、ブラックギルト特有の奥行きが明瞭に残っています。夜光は黒く焼け込まず、インデックス、アラビア数字のトーンが自然に揃っています。針は黒く変化していますが、自然な経年変化です。下地出しのレター、ミニッツトラック、SUPER PRECISION表記も鮮明で、経年を考慮しても非常に魅力的なコンディションです。弊社にて分解清掃済みです。

The Ref.5500 Explorer is a rare variation within Rolex’s 34mm Oyster case family, fitted with an Explorer-signed dial. Unlike the 36mm case seen on the Ref.1016, this model brings together the defining Explorer elements—triangle marker, Arabic numerals, Mercedes hands, and lollipop seconds hand—within a more compact case size. The dial is a glossy black gilt mirror dial. At 6 o’clock, it is signed “T<25 SWISS T<25,” with only the central “SWISS” executed in gilt, while the “T<25” markings on either side were printed later, reflecting a transitional specification. The watch is fitted with a Ref.6635 expansion Oyster bracelet, 57 end links, and a clasp dated 64/4.

The case shows minor scratches from use, but the lugs retain good thickness, and the proportions from the bezel to the case sides remain well preserved. The dial has an excellent glossy mirror surface, with the depth characteristic of a black gilt dial clearly present. The luminous material has not darkened heavily, and the tone of the indexes and Arabic numerals is naturally consistent. The hands have darkened with age, but this appears to be a natural vintage change. The gilt lettering, minute track, and “SUPER PRECISION” text remain sharp, making the dial highly attractive even when considered against its age. Fully serviced by our watchmaker.

The appeal of the Ref.5500 Explorer lies in the condensed character of its dial when compared with the more familiar Ref.1016. This example combines the light, comfortable wear of a 34mm case with a glossy black mirror dial, gilt lettering, tritium markings, and a period expansion bracelet, giving it many points of interest. It has the strength of a Rolex sports model while retaining a modest size that fits naturally into daily wear.
