ROLEX EXPLORER MK5 Ref.1016

COMMENT

COMMENT

This is the Ref.1016 Explorer with a Mark 5 matte dial, produced mainly between 1981 and 1986 and typically found within the 6.6 to 9 million serial range. The Rolex coronet is cleanly executed and well-proportioned, and the “E” in “EXPLORER” is distinguished by its slightly elevated middle stroke—both key traits of the Mark 5 dial. The layout is clean and uncluttered, with minimal decorative elements, giving it a distinctive and refined aesthetic. The bracelet is the solid-link Ref.78360 with 20mm endpieces, paired with 580 end links and clasp code “I5,” making it a well-matched set for this period.

The movement is the COSC-certified Cal.1570, one of Rolex’s most celebrated calibers, produced from the mid-1960s to the late 1980s. It’s known for its robustness, precision, and overall reliability. This example features the hacking seconds function, which became standard from the Mark 3 onward—adding convenience for everyday use.

The case shows only light signs of wear and retains a thick, well-proportioned profile, giving it a strong presence. The dial is in flawless condition with no visible damage, marks, or signs of aging. The original tritium lume remains untouched and has aged to a beautiful beige tone with no signs of darkening, blending naturally with the color of the hands. The plating on the hands shows minor aging but is hardly noticeable when worn. The bracelet exhibits minimal stretch and maintains a solid, comfortable fit. Fully serviced and cleaned by our workshop.

Ref.1016 is a timeless classic that has been loved for generations. The Mark 5 in particular represents one of the most refined executions, offering superb balance of functionality, legibility, and aesthetics. The hacking function and robust solid-link bracelet make it perfectly suited to modern lifestyles. One of the Explorer’s greatest charms lies in how each dial variant brings its own character—this Mark 5 is an outstanding example for those seeking subtle individuality in a vintage Rolex.
