ROLEX DATEJUST Black Matte Ref.1600

COMMENT

COMMENT

The Ref.1600, featuring a smooth 36mm bezel, stands as one of the rarer references in the Rolex lineup, comparable in exclusivity to the Explorer models of the same era. Unlike the more common fluted bezel, its polished smooth bezel conveys a clean, modern impression that allows the natural luster of the metal to take center stage. The black matte dial with white lettering exudes understated sportiness. The indexes, with finely brushed upper surfaces and beveled edges, catch the light with subtle brilliance. At six o’clock, the “σ T SWISS T σ” inscription denotes a Sigma dial—an era-specific hallmark indicating the use of precious metal in the indexes. It is paired with a Jubilee bracelet Ref.6251H, end links 55, and clasp code 71/3, achieving a perfect balance between the bezel’s crisp elegance and the bracelet’s supple texture.

The case retains sharp edges and shows no significant dents or wear. The bezel’s polished surface reflects light fluidly, while the dial maintains a consistent tone with crisp printing and sharply finished indexes. The hands and coronet logo show minimal aging, contributing to the watch’s clean, composed aesthetic. The bracelet exhibits very little stretch, with smooth articulation that preserves its original fit and feel. Fully serviced by our watchmaker.

Among Datejust references, the Ref.1600 with a smooth bezel is particularly scarce, admired for its serene and understated character. Its subdued reflection contrasts beautifully with the brilliance of fluted bezels, making it effortlessly suited to modern style. The combination of a black matte dial, white lettering, and Sigma signature places it among the most visually refined and collectible vintage Rolex variations—one that captivates not through opulence, but through texture, proportion, and quiet detail.

The Datejust remains one of Rolex’s most enduring and universally admired models. Rolex was the first to introduce the instantaneous date-change mechanism—the “Datejust” function—at midnight. Launched in 1945, it is the oldest model in Rolex’s regular collection, offered in a wide variety of sizes and materials for men and women alike. Its timeless appeal lies in its versatility and enduring design excellence.
