GALLET Flight Officer World Time Clamshell

COMMENT

HIGHLIGHT

World Time,   Clamshell Case

COMMENT

This Flight Officer timepiece from the 1940s boasts the distinguished Venus 150 movement and falls under the second generation of Garrett watches. Departing from the luminescent center chronograph feature of the initial Flight Officer generation starting in 1939, this second generation showcases a simpler design. Moreover, within the second generation, this particular piece is from the early years when the movement lacked shock resistance. The case is a clamshell design with a rotating bezel, featuring Garrett's patented construction with a shell-like two-layer structure held together by four screws, ensuring remarkable water resistance. The lugs, unique to this period of Flight Officer models, showcase a stylish cutting.

The dial presents various features, including a world time display, chapter ring, indices, and a spiral tachymeter, arranged sequentially from the outside. The hands are adorned with radium lume.

Considering the era, the case exhibits minimal noticeable external blemishes, with well-defined edges, presenting itself in excellent condition. The dial showcases aging-induced discoloration. The blue steel hands maintain their vivid color, adding depth to the overall appearance. Despite being around 80 years old, this watch has been serviced at our shop, ensuring reliable operation. The chronograph function operates smoothly, and the watch is ready for continued use. A video displaying its functionality is available.

Developed to meet specific requirements of the U.S. Army Air Forces, the Flight Officer was issued to pilots during World War II. Its revolutionary features, including a rotating 12-hour bezel indicating major world cities, allowed pilots to easily calculate time changes when crossing longitude lines. Post-war, it found use among civilian aviators, showcasing its versatile presence in the aviation scene.

Garrett's Clamshell, the world's first waterproof chronograph, was manufactured for 20 years starting in 1931. The patented case, as seen in this model, is commonly referred to as the "Clamshell case," characterized by its structure sandwiching the hinged crystal between the top and back of the case using four screws.

The brand is strongly associated with chronographs, and it gained prominence for developing single-push chronographs in the 1910s and 1920s. Established in 1862 by Julian Gallet in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, under the name "Julian Gallet," the company went through changes over the years. In 1883, leadership was passed on to Julian's son, Leon Gallet, and the company became known as "Leon Gallet." The brand swiftly expanded into the United States, establishing a subsidiary in 1864.
