OMEGA Ref.389 Tre-Tacche Black Gilt Dial

COMMENT

COMMENT

This piece pairs Omega’s Tre-Tacche case with the hand-wound Cal. 234SC T1 (center seconds), exemplifying the early era of waterproof wristwatch design. With a case diameter of approximately 30.5 mm, its compact proportions are a key part of the watch’s appeal. The mid-case features a flat upper surface, giving the form a distinctly Art Deco character; rather than relying solely on rounded contours, it retains a sense of tension and structure. The black gilt mirror dial presents a glossy black ground with a gold minute track, while the logo and lettering are executed by exposing the gilt base, allowing their outlines to emerge crisply. Luminous Arabic numerals and syringe hands complete a sport-oriented specification characteristic of this period.

The case shows surface wear and linear marks consistent with use, though the overall mass and definition of the form remain intact. The case back bears the “WATERPROOF / FAB. SUISSE DEPOSE” inscription, the Ω symbol, and the three-point notches distinctive to Tre-Tacche cases, all contributing to its period-correct presence. The mirror dial exhibits some changes in texture, yet retains its sheen and the strong contrast of the gilt elements. The luminous material on the hands and indices has settled into a gentle beige tone, giving the watch a calm, cohesive expression. Fully serviced by our watchmaker.

This specification reflects Omega’s determination to compete head-on with contemporary rivals such as Longines. The three-point notched case back—designed to be opened with a dedicated tool—and the thick construction were integral to achieving water resistance through case architecture. Paired with this is the Cal. 234SC T1, a center-seconds movement that represented the cutting edge at a time when small seconds still predominated, offering improved legibility and mechanical rationality. The concentrated 30.5 mm size, the Art Deco lines, and the tension created by the black-and-gold gilt palette together distill the appeal of early waterproof Omega watches into a single, compelling example.
