特徴的なフジツボ型の大型ケースは、放射状に施されたヘアライン仕上げにより、力強く印象的な外観を形づくっています。クロノグラフに加え、多機能を搭載した設計は、飛行士の多様なニーズに応えるために考案されたものです。インナー回転ベゼルは8時位置のリューズで操作可能で、経過時間の確認に使用できます。青色のデュアルタイム針は10時位置のリューズで独立調整ができ、異なるタイムゾーンの時刻を同時に表示できます。9時位置には24時間表示計が配され、風防にはドーム型のガラスを採用。これらはすべて初期型ならではの特徴です。ダイヤルには12時位置のアワーマーカーにトリチウムドットが存在しない「A4.12 Without Dots」仕様が採用されており、クロノグラフ用プッシャーにはラウンド型のプリントが見られます。ブレスレットは155エンドリンクに1159クラスプという構成です。

ダイヤルのグレーベースは経年変化によりまばらにブラウンへと変化し、まるで迷彩柄のような独特の風合いを見せています。ミニッツレイルやインナーベゼルには目立つ傷や曇りがなく、視認性の高い状態を保っています。針とインデックスに塗布された夜光塗料はベージュからブラウンへと経年変化し、ヴィンテージらしい深みを加えています。ケースのサンレイ仕上げは中心から放射状に明確に残っており、稜線の立体感も保持された、清潔感のあるコンディションです。弊社にて分解清掃済みです。

1969年の発表に先立ち、同年3月にはケース構造やスペアパーツに関する技術文書が準備されていたことからもわかるように、フライトマスターの開発は綿密に進められていました。その中でも本個体に搭載されたA4ダイヤルは、最初期の約5,000本に採用された特別な仕様で、12時位置にトリチウムドットを備えない点が特徴です。また、付属のボックスに転写されている写真にもドットレスのA4ダイヤルが描かれており、当時の意匠が忠実に反映されています。優れた視認性と多機能性を実現しながら、時の流れとともに唯一無二の表情を帯びたこの初期型は、単なる収集対象を超えた、記憶と機能が融合する存在感を放つ一本です。

COMMENT

The distinctive "barnacle-shaped" oversized case features a bold and impactful appearance, accentuated by a finely executed radial brushed finish. This watch was designed to meet the diverse needs of aviators, combining chronograph functionality with multiple complications. The inner rotating bezel, operated via the crown at 8 o’clock, enables precise tracking of elapsed time. The blue dual-time hand is independently adjustable through the 10 o’clock crown, allowing simultaneous display of a second time zone. A 24-hour indicator is positioned at 9 o’clock, while the domed glass crystal adds further dimension—a specification unique to the first-generation model. Notably, the dial features the rare "A4.12 Without Dots" configuration, lacking tritium dots at the 12 o’clock marker. The chronograph pushers bear early round-style markings, and the bracelet is equipped with 155 end links and a 1159 clasp.

The grey base of the dial has aged to an irregular mottled brown, evoking a unique camouflage-like texture. The minute track and inner bezel remain free from noticeable blemishes or fogging, preserving excellent legibility. The luminous material applied to the hands and indices has gracefully aged from beige to brown, enhancing the vintage aesthetic. The sunray finish on the case radiates cleanly from the center, and the sharp contour lines remain intact—an impressively well-preserved condition. Fully disassembled and serviced by our workshop.

Prior to the Flightmaster’s official launch in 1969, technical documentation detailing the case structure and spare parts had already been prepared as early as March of that year—underscoring the meticulous development process behind the model. The A4 dial configuration featured here was used in the first ~5,000 units and is notable for omitting the tritium dots at 12 o’clock. Furthermore, the box supplied with this piece bears an illustration of the same dotless dial, authentically reflecting the design of the era. Balancing advanced functionality with exceptional legibility, this early version of the Flightmaster has taken on a singular character through time.
