ソリッドな大型ケースに回転式インナーダイヤルとオニオンリューズを組み合わせ、視覚的にも機能的にも特異な存在感を放つパイロットウォッチ。ケース径は47mmに達し、航空時計としての用途に沿った視認性と操作性を重視した設計です。本個体はシルバー925製ではなく、後期型のステンレススチール仕様。回転式インナーディスクには0〜60の目盛りが刻まれ、当時の航空航法において秒単位での補正を可能にしています。この構造は、アメリカ海軍士官で航法技術者でもあったフィリップ・ヴァン・ホーン・ウィームス大佐の発案によるもので、ロンジンは1930年代から彼の協力のもと、実用性を突き詰めた設計を形にしました。

ケースは目立ったダメージがなく、良好なコンディションを維持。ダイヤルは13分方向と17分方向に僅かなクラック線がありますが、肉眼では認識できません。弊社にて分解清掃済みで、リューズのファンクションは正常に作動します。

ムーブメントはCal.37.9を搭載し、リューズとは独立した軸でインナーディスクを操作できる機構を採用。これは無線電波による時刻信号（タイムシグナル）に基づき、秒単位での誤差修正を行う「セカンドセッティング機能」であり、クロノメーター精度を求められる航空任務において不可欠な装備でした。大型のドーム型風防は視認性と防塵性を兼備し、裏蓋は二重構造で気密性と耐衝撃性にも優れます。こうした特徴から、Weemsは単なる時計ではなく「航法装置」として生まれた背景を持ちます。特にこの大型ケース仕様は限られたプロフェッショナル向けに製造されたもので、現存数も少なく、時計史における一つの到達点ともいえる歴史的価値を備えています。

COMMENT

This pilot’s watch combines a solid oversized case with a rotating inner dial and an onion crown, delivering a distinctive presence both visually and functionally. Measuring an impressive 47 mm in diameter, its design prioritizes legibility and ease of operation in line with its aviation purpose. This example is the later stainless-steel version rather than the earlier sterling silver 925 model. The rotating inner disc is graduated from 0 to 60, allowing precise second-by-second adjustments for aerial navigation. The mechanism was conceived by U.S. Navy officer and navigation specialist Captain Philip Van Horn Weems, with Longines bringing the concept to life in the 1930s in close collaboration with him, refining it into a tool of pure functionality.

The case shows no notable damage and remains in excellent condition. The dial exhibits minor hairline cracks near the 13- and 17-minute markers, visible only under certain lighting and barely noticeable to the naked eye. The watch has been disassembled and cleaned in our workshop, and the crown functions operate flawlessly.

Inside beats the Cal. 37.9 movement, featuring a mechanism that allows the inner disc to be adjusted independently from the crown. This “second-setting” function enabled pilots to correct the watch to the exact second based on wireless time signals—an essential feature for aviation missions requiring chronometer-grade precision. The large domed crystal ensures both clarity and dust protection, while the double-backed case offers enhanced sealing and shock resistance. The Weems was conceived not merely as a timekeeper but as a true navigational instrument. In particular, this large-case version was produced in limited numbers for professional use, making surviving examples scarce and granting it exceptional historical significance—standing as a milestone in the history of horology.
