COMMENT

1940年代初頭のオイスターエベレストアーミーRef.3139です。クッション型のオイスターケースは、上面が鏡面仕上げで、側面がヘアライン仕上げとなっています。3段にカットされた重厚なラグとフラットなベゼルが特徴的です。クッションケースは他のモデルには見られない珍しい造形です。スクリューバックとねじ込み式リューズは健在で、堅牢性が抜群です。鉛のパッキンが入っており、当時は防水性・防塵性を考慮して製造されました。リューズにはデザイン性の高い独自のものが装備されています。ダイヤルはルミナスのアラビアインデックスとギルトのミニッツライン、レイルトラックをそれぞれ配し、読時性能を追求したデザインです。24時間表記のミリタリーテイストを採用しており、針はシリンジ針で、赤秒針は読字性に優れます。

1940年代のロレックスで、ここまで使用感を感じさせない個体は稀有です。ケースは素晴らしいプロポーションで、傷の見られない当時の鏡面仕上げやケースサイドとケースバックのヘアラインは、当時の質感を完全に保っています。ほとんど使用されていないと推察されますが、ダイヤルには経年変化が表れています。焼けによるヴィンテージの風格が現れています。アラビアインデックスのルミナスは焼けていますが、黒つぶれしていません。針のブルースチールと赤秒針は色がよく残っています。弊社にて分解掃除済みです。

ロレックスは、戦争中の連合軍に3000を超える時計を供給しました。Ref.3139は、これらの中で最も有名なモデルです。クッション型のオイスターケースは、野外で湿気や埃から時計を守るために兵士に着用され、ロレックスの一つの答えでした。この時点で連合国に供給していたことは非常に興味深い歴史です。同じ仕様はこのエベレストなどでも見られますが、赤の24時間表記によりアーミーらしいスペックとなっています。

COMMENT

This is an Oyster Army Ref.3139 from the early 1940s. The cushion-shaped Oyster case features a mirror-finished top and hairline-finished sides. Its heavy three-tiered lugs and flat bezel are distinctive. The cushion case is a rare design not seen in other models. The screw-back and screw-down crown remain functional, ensuring excellent durability. It was manufactured with lead gaskets, considering waterproof and dustproof properties at the time. The crown has a unique and stylish design. The dial is designed for optimal readability, with luminous Arabic numerals, gilt minute markers, and a railroad track. It also has a military-style 24-hour format, syringe hands, and a red seconds hand for a distinctive look.

It is rare to find a 1940s Rolex in such pristine condition. The case has excellent proportions, and the original mirror finish and hairline on the case sides and back remain intact, suggesting it was scarcely used. The dial shows signs of aging, giving it a vintage charm. The luminous Arabic numerals have aged but are not blackened. The blue steel hands and red seconds hand retain their color well. The watch has been disassembled and cleaned by our team.

Rolex supplied over 3,000 watches to the Allied forces during the war. The Ref.3139 is perhaps the most famous model among these. The cushion-shaped Oyster case was Rolex’s solution for soldiers, protecting the watch from moisture and dust in the field. It is a fascinating historical note that Rolex was supplying the Allies at this time. Similar case designs can be seen in models like the Everest, but the red 24-hour markers give it a distinctly military specification.
