COMMENT

Ref.5508はガードレス（竜頭ガードの無い）の最後のサブマリーナーです。竜頭は60mmサイズで100m防水です。ダイヤルはブラックミラーのギルトダイヤル、ゴールドがかったレターやラインで風格を醸し出しています。100m＝300ftの表記のみシルバーのプリントレターです。エクスクラメーションダイヤルと呼ばれる、ラジウムからトリチウムへ移行する最初期のダイヤルで、6時位置の夜光にドットがあることが特徴です。ベゼルはサイドにコインエッジがありガードレス世代ならでは、後のRef.5513とは異なる形状です。61年2期のリベットブレスを装備しています。

素晴らしいコンディションです。ダイヤルのダメージが少なく、半艶を残しています。ルミナスは黒焼けが少なく、ガードレスサブの年式としては望みうる最高の色合いです。パフィーでこんもりとしており、ベージュ焼けが見事です。針の劣化はリアリティーを感じさせるものです。ケースはボリューム感があり、太くて長いラグが現存しています。弱点ともいえるオリジナルの真鍮ベゼルの状態がすこぶる良いです。グロッシーなブラックカラー、コインエッジがしっかりと残っており、大きなダメージがありません。弊社にて分解掃除の様子を、ブログに掲載しておりますので、併せてご確認だくさい。

ガードレス、ゴールドギルト、サークルライン、エクスクラメーションドットなど、サブマリーナーが完成する前のスペックが満載です。約2年間と言う短い期間で製造されていた希少な5508のスーパーコンディション。1950年代とダイバーズウォッチの時計史から見ても萌芽期であり、希少な作品です。

エクスクラメーションダイアルは、ロレックスが文字盤（インデックスと針）の発光素材に使用されるラジウムの強度を低減したものに用いられた意匠です。放射線量が50年末から60年前にかけての原子力委員会による新しい規制に適合したことを示しています。これは通常、1960年代初頭のロレックスのダイヤルに表示されます。Ref.5508はその過渡期の製品です。1950年代末製でありながら、このダイヤルを搭載しているものが数多く市場にあります。あるいはその逆で1960年代初頭製でありながら、エクスクラミネーションダイアルでないものも多くあり、それらは混在しています。1950年代末製ストック品を新しい規格に合わせたダイヤルで1960年初頭に販売したとする説、販売規制が厳しいところなど国によっては新しい規格で販売した説があります。

世界初の本格的ダイバーズウォッチ＜SUBMARINER（サブマリーナ）＞の誕生は1953年。ファーストモデルの防水性は600ft=180m防水と言われ、当時としてはまさに驚異的な数字でした。ロレックスの成功はまさにサブマリーナであり、ブランドの基礎となった歴史的名機は今もなお多くのファンを虜にしています。

Ref.5508 is the final Submariner without crown guards. The crown measures 60mm and is waterproof to 100m. The dial features a black mirror gilt dial, exuding elegance with its gold-toned lettering and lines. Only the 100m=300ft indication is printed in silver. Known as the Exclamation Dial, it's one of the earliest dials transitioning from radium to tritium, characterized by the dot at 6 o'clock for luminescence. The bezel boasts coin edge on the side, unique to the guardless generation and differs in shape from the later Ref.5513. It comes equipped with a rivet bracelet from the second half of 1961.

It's in excellent condition with minimal damage to the dial, retaining a semi-glossy finish. The luminous material shows little aging, making it one of the best hues for a guardless Sub. It's puffy and full, displaying a stunning beige patina. The aging of the hands adds a touch of authenticity. The case has a substantial feel with thick, long lugs still intact. The condition of the original brass bezel, which could be considered a weakness, is remarkably good. The glossy black color and well-preserved coin edge show no significant damage. This Submariner is packed with specifications from before the model's completion, including guardless, gold gilt, circle lines, and exclamation dots. It's a superb condition of the rare 5508, produced for approximately two years. In the history of dive watches in the 1950s, it marks an early stage and is a rare piece.

The Exclamation Dial was a design used by Rolex to reduce the strength of radium used in the luminescent material on the dial (indexes and hands). It indicates compliance with new regulations by the Atomic Energy Commission in the late 1950s to early 1960s. This is typically seen on Rolex dials from the early 1960s. Ref.5508 represents a transitional product from that period. Although produced at the end of the 1950s, many examples with this dial exist on the market. Conversely, there are also many examples produced in the early 1960s without the Exclamation Dial, indicating a mix of dials. Some theories suggest that late 1950s stock was fitted with dials meeting the new standards and sold in the early 1960s, while in some countries with strict sales regulations, they were sold with the new standard.
